Euthanasia Is Rife But Ignored In SA

The act of assisting someone to die is fairly commonplace in South Africa, but people in this country tend to turn a blind eye towards it, says Professor Willem Landman of NGO Dignity SA. Landman was commenting on today’s news that his counterpart, Cape Town-based professor Sean Davison, has been cleared of an attempted murder charge in New Zealand for performing euthanasia on his mother.

With more South Africans refusing to be counted, our friends at Stats SA have begun resorting to, well, mildly extreme measures. Their application, which was submitted to the courts, requests permission to enforce the provisions of the Statistics Act. Basically, if you don’t comply they can throw your naughty ass in jail for 6 months or slap you with a R10 000 fine.

Cisco have just come out with their annual Visual Networking Index, which is a pretty reliable source of internet traffic reporting. Global traffic will quadruple, by 2015, with Asia’s traffic generation overtaking North America. Which is cool, but less cool than the stuff they say about traffic in South Africa, which is after the jump.

South Africa Ranks 121st On ‘Global Peace Index’

Which puts us behind Iran. The Global Peace Index, put together by the Institute for Economics & Peace, is apparently made up of a couple of factors – including levels of democracy and transparency, education and national wellbeing. Top three are New Zealand, Iceland and Japan, with Iraq coming in last (149th place).
