Known as a ‘Miyake Event’, this storm would have hit when sabre-toothed cats still roamed Table Mountain, and our atmosphere was blasted with so much solar radiation that the radiocarbon can still be found in Earth’s tree rings.
While the storm is expected to hit this weekend, Earth is currently experiencing several minor solar storms.

Yesterday NASA managed to capture the clearest-yet footage of a solar flare in process after magnetic fields on the Sun’s northeastern curve exploded in huge streams of plasma and sun stuff. The footage only accounts for about five seconds of explosion, but it’s very, very cool, both in and out of time-lapse.
