Femen is a Ukrainian group of activists that has become popular in Europe for staging small, half-naked protests. Some of their members were arrested over the weekend after trying to break into an invitation-only gathering of international CEOs and political leaders held in the Swiss resort town of Davos.
Do you know what self-immolation is? It’s the rather rare practice of setting oneself on fire to show how strongly you feel about something. Go figure. In the Middle East and North Africa though, it’s become more commonplace ever since a Tunisian vegetable seller did it to protest police harrassment, evoking an uprising at the end of 2010.
The saying goes that you shouldn’t bring a knife to a gunfight. But in Egypt, where violence is once again reaching a crescendo, protesters are protecting themselves with whatever they can find as they fight fierce street battles with the military. Check out their home-made armour consisting of garden buckets, gas masks and…egg boxes.
20-year-old Egyptian activist Aliaa Mahdy has caused uproar by posting nude self-portraiture on her blog, to protest “a society of violence, racism, sexism, sexual harassment and hypocrisy,” which isn’t the usual motivation for uploading naked pics, but whatever. Worried about losing the moderate vote, liberal politicians are making a point of criticizing Mahdy’s apparent impropriety.
At 2am this morning the NYPD started violently clearing out Zuccoti Park, where the peaceful Occupy Wall Street protestors have been camped out. The cops are using pepper spray, they are using LRAD sound weapons, and they are actively preventing any official media from reporting on their violation of OWS members’ constitutional rights. Shit’s gotten real.
Mayor of Denver, Michael Hancock, has been pressuring members of the Occupy Denver movement to pick a leader, “to deal with City and State officials.” So the protesters, in the most benign shove-it gesture imaginable, elected a three-and-a-half-year-old border collie. Named Shelby.
Brookfield Properties, owners of the Zuccotti Park at the OWS protestors are demonstrating in, had called up the NYPD for “ assistance during their cleaning operation”. There were concerns that this would bring the protest to an abrupt end. This was prevented by a last minute statement from Deputy May Holloway, insisting that the “cleaning” operation be postponed.
The New York protest movement, “Occupy Wall Street,” currently enjoying a crowd of 15 000 supporters, has inspired folk in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, and other cities around the United States to join in on the fun/outcry. Some level of police violence is being seen in all cases, with Seattle police forcibly removing all “occupation” settlements.
While it might not be doing too well at the moment, the New York Stock Exchange is fairly important. One of the world’s biggest markets, the daily business of the NYSE has been threatened for a while now by the Occupy Wall Street protests. Internet hacker group, Anonymous, has now also jumped on the bandwagon, […]
Dorrit Moussaieff – wife of Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson, Iceland’s president – made a dramatic gesture over the weekend by hopping a security fence to join in with a group of protesters hurling eggs and yoghurt at politicians, demanding that the government do more to help the lower-income bracket.
As the “Occupy Wall Street” protests enter their ninth day, an increasing number of videos and photos have begun surfacing, showing near-indiscriminate use of tasers, mace and kenneling by the NYPD on demonstrators, who are protesting a financial system that apparently favours the wealthy and powerful over ordinary citizens.
Chris Anderson, graphic design student, is installing 1 000 broken surfboards in the sands of a Sydney beach to inform people of the unsustainable practices in surfboard manufacturing. I’m not sure how breaking a thousand surfboards helps this problem, but the installation looks pretty cool.
Bravo. Anti-riot police used tear gas and water canons (loaded with dyed water) to disperse supporters of the opposition party in the outskirts of Kampala yesterday. The group had gathered to mourn people killed during demonstrations earlier this year.
Banksy’s put up some new art on his site because all the other well-known people were speaking out about the NewsCorp. hacking scandal, and Banksy didn’t want to be left behind. Which is nice! Because honestly I’d almost forgotten about Murdoch. Way to be relevant, Banksy.
Pimps and prostitutes alike, from Seoul’s red-light district, are furious with the police. So much so that they’ve now started stocking their brothels with flammable liquid and gas containers. They say they are willing to set themselves on fire if things don’t change. This is in response to “increased patrols, police cars parking visibly in the area and plainclothes officers watching them with binoculars.”
There was a fair amount of coverage about the apparent arrest of “Amina Arraf”, the pseudonym of openly gay Syrian blogger behind ‘Gay Girl In Damascus,’ which did a lot for getting word out about human rights issues in Syria. Except it turns out that Amina was invented by 40-year-old Tom McMaster, from Georgia.
The Syrian government yesterday passed a bill lifting the country’s decades-old emergency law, some hours after protesters were fired upon by security forces. This follows weeks of pro-reform demonstrations and protests. Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad has at this point not yet signed the bill into legislation.
A number of bloggers have been making reference to a ‘Jasmine Revolution,’ wherein Chinese citizens show discontent for local corruption by walking around crowded public areas on Sunday afternoons. This never happened, but Sunday walks did. Authorities are convinced that the protest is still happening.
On Monday we ran a story about Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, the king of Bahrain, granting each family in his kingdom 20k in a brilliant attempt at reverse psychology. But apparently the people of Bahrain are bigger Tracy Chapman fans than he thought, as they are now also “talkin’ ’bout a revolution.”
Wow. I’m not sure what the appropriate response is here. Finnish folk referring to themselves as the ‘Food Liberation Army’ have ‘kidnapped’ a statue of Ronald McDonald, and are threatening to execute within a week if their questions concerning the quality of McDonald’s food production are not answered.
Wow, people are still not happy about that chick's post on Marie Claire's website about fat people 'grossing her out'. So how do the public plan on displaying their distaste? Do the exact thing that grosses her out right outside her offices.
Thousands of politically-minded Kiwis have come out in protest to prevent production of the Lord of the Rings prequel, The Hobbit, from moving out of New Zealand. I understand completely – I went through the same thing when my parents made me stop wearing my wizard outfit to school.
Two French students, calling themselves the ‘Niqabitches,’ have posted a video of themselves strolling through Paris wearing the niqab with hot pants and high heels, in protest of France’s recent burka ban. They seem like very nice young ladies.
