Protesters began marching from Woodstock and Cape Town Central train stations to the Western Cape Legislature in the CBD at around 10:50 this morning. Thus far the march has been characterised by heavy police presence, arson (allegedly by protestors), and stun grenades on Sir Lowry Road between Woodstock and the CBD. We’ll keep you posted.
People seeing this sign during an ANC protest march yesterday in Cape Town, must have been struggling to keep a straight face. They misspelled areas as “arears” on their banner. That they still kept marching with it held aloft, shows signs of a failed education system.

Yesterday afternoon, Belgian firemen protested against national budget cuts for the fire department in Brussels. Firemen from all the country gathered in front of Prime Minister’s office with fire trucks and blocked traffic in Brussels’ ring road, burning tyres (yissie!) in the streets and sprayed water and foam towards police guarding the protest. At some point police officers stood knee-deep in foam on the street.

This morning we reported on the current wave of anti-austerity anger that is sweeping across Europe. Millions of workers have been taking part in a so-called European Day of Action and Solidarity against spending cuts and tax hikes. Close to 26 million people are currently unemployed in the European Union, and they are represented by 40 unions across 23 different European countries.
About 50 000 demonstrators defied a ban on protests yesterday in Greece to voice their displeasure with German Chancellor Angela Merkel. She is currently in the country to meet with Greek leaders who are searching for a new package of budget cuts. They need this in order to secure bail-out funds – largely underwritten by the German taxpayer.
Tony Blair has challenged South African Muslims protesting against his visit to SA to rather protest against the Muslims he says are doing most of the killing in Iraq and elsewhere.
