Today is the fourth day that approximately 20 000 workers across South Africa from the freight transport sector are on strike over wages. They rejected the latest offer of a staggered 9% increase, and asked for a 12% increase instead. They have promised to “bring the economy to its knees” if their demands are not met.

Striking miners are deciding to stick with violence as a means to solve the problems at Lonmin’s Marikana mine. Representatives of protesting workers who marched 5km to Lonmin’s Karee mine today from Marikana, said that they will kill Lonmin management unless they stop operations at the platinum mine.

Post-mortem analysis of the shooting at Marikana has revealed startling new evidence, showing that the death of the 36 protestors at the hands of the police may not have been due to the police acting in self-defense. This is contrary to earlier reports that have stated that police retaliated at a small group charging at them with machetes.
Following the death of 34 people (and 78 injured) at Lonmin’s Marikana mine in North West, a special debate was held yesterday in Parliament. But what occurred instead was basically mudslinging and name-calling between different political parties. Earlier this afternoon, expelled ANC Youth League leader Julius Malema continued his defence of the striking Lonmin mineworkers when he went to the Marikana Police Station to lay murder charges against the police who shot dead 34 of their colleagues.
A lot of questions are being asked after the most recent shootout between police and mineworkers at Marikana. By using various camera angles, including this new footage obtained from Al Jazeera, a miner can be seen firing a hand pistol towards authorities first. The police then responded by unleashing a volley of fire into the crowd – gunning down 34 people in the process.
The images of Thursday’s Lonmin shooting are still fresh in the minds of people all around the world. While some Lonmin employees are returning to work for fear of losing their jobs, some face the difficult task of accepting reality in the aftermath of the shooting, including the SAPS.
