Of all South African politicians, Helen Zille easily takes the crown for the most active and engaging Twitter handle. Spawned in her years as the Mayor of Cape Town, Mayor Helen’s Twitter handle quickly made a name for itself as a place where problems were dealt swift death blows. Burst water main? No problem. Shortage […]
The boxing gloves were off yesterday as Zille took to the twittersphere to defend the donations received by the DA from the Gupta’s family and a senior executive, as well as the credibility of the DA. Zille maintains the receipt of a donation and not a bribe. This all began in 2009 when the DA received […]
Prince Harry admits to killing Taliban. Zille withdraws from New Age Breakfast. Tarantino looking enormous. Pippa’s follow-up book canned. World’s best big-wave surfers attempt Mavericks. Wikileaks says Aaron Swartz was a possible source. Dreamliner probe widens.
Cosatu’s provincial secretary in the Western Cape, Tony Ehrenreich, said today that the ANC and opposition parties should table a motion of no confidence in Helen Zille. He blames her for the deaths of two people during the recent farm protests in De Doorns and other parts of the Western Cape.
Early reports are that a farmer in Wellington has been pulled form his bakkie and beaten to death by protesting farm labourers in the Western Cape fruit farming region of Wellington. Western Cape Premier, Helen Zille tweeted the following at 13h00 on Wednesday: Reports coming that a farmer has died after being assaulted in Wellington. […]
Over the past week we’ve seen violent protests by farmworkers demanding higher wages and better working conditions. Farmworkers in the De Doorns and other Western Cape areas went on strike in demand of a R150 daily wage. In a bid to show their support, the ANC in the Eastern Cape called for the complete boycott of South African wines yesterday.
Yesterday the presidency dropped their lawsuit against cartoonist Jonathan “Zapiro” Shapiro and the Sunday Times over the “Lady Justice” cartoon (pic above). Jacob Zuma initially wanted R5m, but the amount was later reduced to R4m. He subsequently dropped the charge of impairment of dignity and further reduced the amount to R100 000 for defamation and an unconditional apology, before dropping the case entirely.
A tweet showing support for a Zuma vs. Zille public debate is currently trending on Twitter. If YOU, like us, feel that a public debate on economic policy between Jacob Zuma and Helen Zille (or Jacob and anyone really) is in the national interest, then read this.
Zille challenges Zuma to a debate, Zuma giggles. Rob and Kirsten are back together. Rebekah Brooks paid a ton of money to leave NewsCorp. Bill Murray gatecrashes a kickball game. All, and more, inside.
Check out Cape Town Mayor, Patricia de Lille, recording a rap tune in a bid to curb drug and alcohol abuse. Non-kids (especially those in advertising and politics) trying to be as cool a real kids normally just looks awkward. So does De Lille manage to not look like a fool doing this? Check it out and decide for yourself – after the jump!

The DA’s march against Cosatu in the Johannesburg city centre became violent earlier. Cosatu members allegedly stormed the march and rocks were thrown. In the process, DA supporters and a journalist from the Mail & Guardian were injured after being hit with stones.
DA Leader Helen Zille was under the spotlight after a new report written on behalf of Public Protector, Thuli Madonsela, alleged that lawful process was not followed in a recent tender procurement by the Western Cape government. Zille has previously spoken out against corruption by stating that she would resign should any tender be found corrupt.
By now, many people within South Africa’s news-following public are familiar with the recent burst of racism that took place on South Africa’s twittersphere involving a model and a “model”. Mistakes were made, but the backlash and long-term effects from a social and mainstream media clamouring may have devastating consequences on the individuals involved. Things begin to go pearshaped when the media is inaccurate with information that disperses frantically when a news story of this nature breaks.
For a political party that prides itself on being squeaky clean, it was only a matter of time before something emerged. It’s not the Arms Deal, but having child p0rn on your office computer is probably not the smartest thing to do – especially if the p0rn involves kids.
A youth activist based in Johannesburg has apparently laid a complaint with the SA Human Rights Commission (HRC) regarding Helen Zille’s tweet of almost two weeks ago, where she referred to scholars in the Eastern Cape that come to the Western Cape for schooling as “refugees”. Read his justification while Pink Floyd’s “The Wall” gently resonates in your head, after the jump!
The above is in reference to Helen Zille’s recent “refugee” Twitter snafu. Keep up the fine work, ladies and gents.
Less than a week after Helen Zille’s latest Twitter-storm about comments she made about the state of education here in the Western Cape versus the same in our neighbours – she called students from the Eastern Cape who attend school here “refugees” – she has gotten all up in the ANC’s grille once more with fresh comments regarding the state of health here versus there.
In something of a coup for local neighbourhood naming campaign, NameYourHood, the organisation has received the full backing and endorsement of Western Cape Premier, Helen Zille. The Premier joins the likes of Guy Lundy (Accelerate Cape Town), Ravi Naidoo (Design Indaba), Mokena Makeka (MDL Founder), Nils Flaatten (Wesgro), Bulelwa Makalima-Ngewana (Cape Town Partnership) and Mariete Du […]
Controversial mixed race posters have been all the rage lately. It’s therefore not surprising that the clever people behind ZANews picked up on it and responded with their own advert. It features Jacob Zuma and Helen Zille, both naked, in a passionate embrace. Have a look – after the jump!
Helen Zille texted the following to 2oceansVibe following the outcome of Julius Malema’s disciplinary hearing.
Premier of the Western Cape, Helen Zille, co-hosted 2oceansVibe Radio‘s Morning Meeting from 08h00 to 09h00. Helen held no punches, bemoaning the timing of the allegations against Public Protector, Thuli Madonsela, relating her experience of having her phone tapped, and praising the Western Cape for it’s entrepreneurial spirit. And then, of course, there was that […]
Helen Zille, Premier of the Western Cape and undercover online enthusiast, will be co-hosting 2oceansVibe Radio‘s Morning Meeting with Lindsay Williams and Richard Hardiman at 09h00 this coming Thursday morning. Helen is, of course, no stranger to the 2oceansVibe Media franchise. You’ll remember her magnificent performance as a 2oceansVibe Weather Girl in November 2009. This […]
The results of yesterday’s fourth democratic municipal elections started trickling in late last night, after a very long, but mostly quiet day of voting. There were long lines, some scanner problems and one or two questions raised here and there.
Police had to step in yesterday when a group of ANC supporters attempted to stop a DA rally from taking place in the Mamelodi Township in Pretoria. This is just a blip on the South African political radar that will quickly be forgotten, but it gave me pause for thought.
In an interesting case of irony, head of the ANC youth league, Julius Malema, said yesterday that head of the DA, Helen Zille, dances like a monkey. An astute political statement from the well learned gentleman.
