The concept of a baby hatch is actually not a uniquely Chinese idea, some European countries literally have a baby hatch where unwanted babies can be dropped off. In America they are called ‘safe surrender sites.’ The Chinese variety is a mixture of the two, basically a tollbooth with a crib in it.

Berlin has just shot to the number three most visited tourist destination in Europe, coming in just behind London and Paris. The difference is that London and Paris have been hosting tourists for a good few hundred years. Berlin, on the other had, has only been welcoming guests for the last 20. Spanish activists are raising a large private fund to pay for a civil action suit against Rodrigo Rato – the former chairman of Bankia, one of the banks central to the Spanish financial crisis. The fundraiser is following the usual decentralized online-activist structure, with members organizing themselves under the #QuerellaPaRato (“Lawsuit for Rato”) hashtag.

Apple has been forced to drop the use of the term “4G” in its UK advertising for the new iPad, bacause not only is 4G not yet available to iPad users in the UK and Europe; it also appears that not all new iPads will be able to work on UK and European 4G when it does arrive. Unemployment Rates In Eurozone Continue To Climb – Spain’s Figures Hit The Roof

If you’re looking for a job, don’t even think seeking your fortune in Europe. Unemployment rates across the Eurozone – the countries which use the euro – continue to climb and in February were at their highest level since the introduction of the single currency in 1999. Spain has been worst hit, with the unemployment rate amongst its under-25 population rising to an alarming 50.5% in February.

Nine people were recently killed in Kosovo when an avalanche covered their house under 10 feet of snow. A little girl, only five years old, was pulled alive from the snow after being buried for more than 10 hours. How do you find someone buried under a storey of snow? With their cellphone.

Belgium’s New Leader Is World’s First Openly Gay Male Head Of State

The new Prime Minister of the previously rudderless Belgium is 60-year old, Elio Di Rupo from the Socialist Party, who was sworn in yesterday. Di Rupo is also openly gay, making him the world’s first full-time openly gay male head of state. Go Belgium!

Europe Bans X-Ray Body Scanners Used In American Airports

Yesterday the European Union prohibited the use of X-ray body scanners, the kind frequently used by airport security in United States, citing cancer risks. American airport security, meanwhile, has deployed hundreds of scanners, screening millions of airline passengers – and if the European Commission’s conclusions can be trusted, exposing a fraction of those passengers to cancer risks.

Yesterday was a big day for European politics, with Poland welcoming their first transsexual woman ever into its parliament. Anna Grodzka was born a man but underwent a sex change. She was also joined by Robert Biedron – the country’s first openly gay man to be elected to office.
