A fake post doing the rounds on social media had some South Africans convinced that a new R500 note would soon be introduced into our national currency.
When you think of the South African rand compared to the pound, for example, you don’t exactly see gold. But that is precisely the history behind the name of our currency.
R21 to the Pound. Netflix African series. Italy lockdown. Grindr sold. New McLaren.
The designs on the new R2 and R5 coins were done by South African artists like Lady Skollie and Rasty Knayles.
The saying goes that ‘cash is king’, but over in South Korea they’re kind of over their coins. So how are they going to handle cutting the small guys out of the equation?
Here in SA we’re all very fond of the Randela, even if it doesn’t pack much of a punch in the global market, but what are the world’s most beautiful bank notes?
Australians are raging about what they says is a poorly designed $5 note, some even comparing it to vomit. No chill ‘Stralia.
Rand makes comeback. Calls for Zuma to resign. Paris bombing suspect expected to sing. Heyneke Meyer is back. Trump backlash. Obama’s Playboy bunny dance partner. Swedish fart crime dismissed. Comic genius dies. Amber Rose emoji nails Cosby.
South Africa is in the middle of an economic shit storm and the only people who can save us now are our own.
Rand slips again. Jack Nicholson offered Queen’s sister cocaine. Obama going into wild with Bear Grylls. R78 confiscated at OR Tambo. Mugabe struggling to walk. Bono’s main wealth is not from music. The immigrant who sleeps with Trump
As the rand slowly decreases in value, placing investors in a tight spot, financial advisors are predicting an eventual increase, possibly even reaching a single digit.
Rand’s 14 year low. NY mayor’s topless women problem. Caitlyn faces manslaughter charges. Greece PM quits. The power of SA ‘coconuts’. Trump does it again. July’s weather phenomenon. Goonies homeowner angry.
Bad news for all those travelling to the UK any time soon – the rand is taking a beating and this time it doesn’t look like it’s coming back.
Here is the new £1 coin for numismatists, a big word for coin collectors, to drool over. The new 12-sided design, similar to the three pence piece currently in circulation, is said to be the hardest in the world to fake.
The current world record for the largest Bitcoin transaction sits neatly at R10 million – which is a damn good showing for a currency that should really still be in its infancy.
Ever since their introduction to the WWW, we’ve been posting a lot of stories about Bitcoin. But what is Bitcoin, and how does it work? New York-based director and designer Duncan Elms has directed and animated an amazing short motion infographic explaining Bitcoin in detail.
Remember the story about a bitcoin ATM opening in Canada? Well, they’ve already installed it and its working as we speak. The machine now lives at Waves Coffee House in Vancouver’s downtown area. It uses palm-recognition for users to log in to their accounts, which is pretty nifty – but could get pretty gross pretty quickly.
The Rand is getting whipped like a red-headed stepchild, right now. Overnight the Rand tumbled to a four year low against the US dollar. Don’t even look at the Euro exchange rate. It’ll tingle your loins.
On Tuesday, the Department of Justice shut down online payment system Liberty Reserve. The network was charged with money laundering, with the founder Arthur Budovsky and four others being arrested. This closure has raised the question if Bitcoin will be next, because Bitcoin’s exchange is very similar to that of Liberty Reserve.
Are you still unsure of how exactly this decentralised currency works, or keen to get in on the action? Then check out this video for a step-by-step process of opening a Bitcoin wallet.

President Jacob Zuma made a very cool announcement this weekend on the 22nd anniversary of Nelson Mandela’s release from prison. Towards the end of this year South Africa will get a series of new bank notes which will have Madiba’s image as the main illustration instead of the animals we’ve come to know.
