The 65th Cannes Film Festival officially begins today, and the South African delegation is making a pretty strong showing there. They’ve got 130 South African filmmakers attending, the largest SA delegation ever to go to Cannes, showcasing 12 feature films and eight documentaries – including Otelo Burning, by the guys who did Surfing Soweto.
Kia’s latest adverts were designed around a dual zone air conditioning system they’ve developed. Their marketers thought the best way to demonstrate this feature was to depict a cartoon school girl on one side of a poster as innocent, and suggestively slutty on the other. Her teacher is also involved, and seems very keen. Clearly not everyone thinks this is clever marketing. Full advert inside.
Last month we told you about Oliver Hermanus’ Skoonheid – the first Afrikaans feature film to be screened at the Cannes Film Festival. This weekend saw the end of the festival with the all-important awards section, and Skoonheid walked away with the Queer Palm Award! It is given to a film that contributes to lesbian, gay, bi or transgender issues. Three cheers for Oliver!
Anyone who likes their cinema experience to be slightly more challenging than the conventional would have heard of Danish film maker, Lars von Trier. But instead of challenging the crowd with his latest film, Melancholia, starring Kirsten Dunst, it was his attempt at satire during a press conference that has now earned him the title of “persona non grata” at this prestigious festival.

Ja-nee ouens, Die Taal maak my sommer vandag baie trots! For the first time ever, an Afrikaans feature film will be shown at the Cannes Film Festival. It is called “Skoonheid” and it is a pretty awesome considering it will be show alongside new movies by the likes of Gus Van Sant, Lars von Trier, and Pedro Almodovar.
