Here’s our first taste of a sweet little piece of cinematography coming our way later this year from producer Tim Burton, and director Timur Bekmambetov (of Russia’s Day Watch and Night Watch fame), Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter!
A group of strangers have saved a young boy’s life when he slipped from a ski-lift and fell 25ft into their arms. He survived without a single injury, and there are amazing photographs to prove it. Check them all out after the jump.
There was a lot of media coverage of the biggest solar storm in 6 years yesterday. Doomsayers were claiming the world’s electricity would be knocked out and that we’d all be burned to death by radiation. This all turned out to be a lot of hot air. What did happen though, thanks to the storm, was a spectacular display of the Northern Lights. Full gallery after the jump.
Don’t you just hate it when the traffic cops take over and direct traffic? They’re typically bored, only half interested in what they are doing, and obese. Not in the Philippines. Here you direct traffic by breakdancing. You have to see this, it’s amazing! Video after the jump.
A scene which could’ve come right off the pages of Slumdog Millionaire took place at a Mumbai train station recently when a citizen-initiated flash mob erupted in the midst of commuters.
How’s this for awesome? A woman in America has successfully stopped a robbery in progress, by using an in-home CCTV that she streamed from work. Hit continue to check out the video.
Feel free to file this one under “awesome.” Indie band, moe., who I’m sure you’ve never heard of, has performed a live version of their song “Crab Eyes” – using nothing but iPads. See this amazing video after the jump.
The Ahrlac (Advanced High Performance Reconnaissance Light Aircraft) will have a number of uses, including border patrol and surveillance. But, just in case, they’ve also equipped it with a 20mm canon. At a cool R79,59 million each, these badboys aren’t exactly recession friendly. But who cares? Who needs money when you have guns?
46-year-old Swiss stuntman Freddy Nock is a bigger bad-ass than you are. And he proved it by tight-rope walking. He scaled Germany’s highest mountain — the Zugspitze, which stands 2962 metres above sea level — by walking along its kilometer-long cable car cable. Without a balancing pole.
You’ve probably wondered about this yourself. What would happen if you had access to a backhoe, and a swimming pool, and weren’t constrained by issues like the law, or those stupid labels saying ‘do not operate heavy machinery while intoxicated’? Well you don’t have to wonder anymore; these Hungarian folks have the answer.
You’re going to want to watch this. OK Go have put out a new experimental music video for their new track, All Is Not Lost. You remember that one video with the treadmills? Or with the Rube Goldberg machine? Yeah, this is better than that.
“My nipples were so cold they started talking to me.” I don’t know where to begin. There is simply too much awesome in these videos for me to add anything else. That would spoil it. Ladies and gentlemen, please allow me to make your day, nay, your weekend, by checking out Jean-Claude Van Damme in these beer commercials for Coors Light.
That’s right fellow civilians, superheroism is no longer reserved for super-babies in rockets from other planets. The days of microwaving spiders, trying to recreate Spidey’s powers are over! Behold, now you too can slip out during your lunch break and save the world, and all it will cost you is a ticket to the Big Apple.
Researchers at the University of California have put together tiny robot brains that replicate the long term memory function in rats; using this, they could switch long-term memory on and off with a button. Which means ‘electronic memory’ and the possibility of knowing stuff without having to learn stuff is suddenly a real thing.
Australian TV presenter, Karl Stefanovich found himself interviewing the Dalai Lama, as one does, and decided that the best thing to do would be to try that “the Dalai Lama walks into a pizza shop” joke. Take a look and see how well that worked out for him.
Hot damn but I love the future. Iceland is drawing up a new constitution, in the wake of the country’s commercial banks collapsing. Which is news, but not news-news; the interesting part is how the former vikings are going about the process – they’re crowdsourcing the draft online, with links to Facebook, Twitter and Youtube accounts.
moonage3, who uploaded this advert by Hahn Brewery, called it the ‘Most EPIC beer commercial EVER.’ Now, the word ‘epic’ is getting a little stale, and nobody likes too many letters in upper case, but just this once I’m in agreement with moonage3. Please. Let Hahn Brewery show you how they put awesome in a bottle.
There’s a lot of that volcano business going down at the moment. Over 3,500 people have been evacuated from the area surrounding the Chilean volcano Puyehue, active for the first time in 50 years. Volcanic ash, stirred up by the activity, has spread across the border into Argentina, shutting down businesses and airports.
You guys remember photographer Sacha Goldberger and his depressed grandmother, right? He took photos of her dressed as a superhero to cure her depression. And it seemed to work! Which is why Goldberger and Mamika have released another round of pretty rad faux-superhero photographs. There’s a superdog now, too.
So Joshua Kaufman had his MacBook stolen in March. Which sucks – he reported the crime to the police, but they couldn’t help, due to lack of resources. Except Kaufman has the Hidden app on his MacBook, which lets him remotely stalk and photograph the thief – and put them online. Thanks, Internet.
Some people will just always be cool. Take this guy for example – when it comes to making an exit, he’s pretty much nailed it. I love how he manages to hold his beer steady, climb THROUGH the car window one leg at a time without failing, and then drive off nonchalantly into the distance. Now that’s a real boss – respect!
Hell. Yes. Filmmaker Jon Gustafsson caught footage of the Grimsvötn eruption – the one that closed all those Icelandic airports and grounded all those planes – from the apparent safey of an Icelandic military helicopter. It looks pretty cool. And I’m very excited to have written that sentence.
Ananias Rodrigues da Silva, the Brazilian Barack Obama lookalike, stopped by São Paulo to pay a visit to Francisco Fernandes – a bar owner who has been repeatedly harassed for his resemblance to Osama bin Laden. The two had a couple of shots and posed for photographs. It’s pretty great.
You guys like water balloons, right? Look outside, of course you do. And slow-motion things are pretty swell. And it’s Friday. So click through, start your weekend right. Seriously though, this isn’t so much a bursting water balloon as an exploding water bed. They’re called red giants.
Hello! It’s Friday, everything is awful except this. A German dude who entertains himself by building slingshots and posting videos of them online has built a crossbow that shoots machetes because if you really need a reason to build a machete crossbow, something is broken inside of you. Please, enjoy.
Hooray for science. US government scientists say they have discovered three powerful HIV antibodies, the strongest of which neutralizes 91% of HIV strains, more than any HIV antibody yet discovered. Details inside.
Yesterday, Virgin America held an opening ceremony for their new Terminal 2 at San Francisco International Airport; press were ushered onto a waiting aircraft, and told to keep an eye out for Virgin-Galactic-related-things after takeoff. After about 20 minutes they were asked to look out of their windows, because White Knight 2 and Spaceship 2 were doing fly-byes.
It’s tough fighting the powers that be, and it’s definitely not a job for all of us. But these legends in Libya deserve fat pats on the back and huge cubans (cigars – clean your mind). They’ve just returned from a battle in the eastern town of Brega. Check out their vehicle – or what’s left of it anyway – and drink a toast to these brave chaps tonight at the pub.
I’m starting to think everything is awesome in Botswana! A leopard had been stalking a warthog, but when his prey disappeared into some particularly long grass he was forced to stretch himself to his full height like a meerkat on watch. Every few minutes the leopard would balance expertly on his hind legs to keep track of his tasty prey.
In support of Equal Payday, which seeks to address the disparity between male and female salaries around the world, Benny Benassi has remade the sexy-construction-outfits video for ‘Satisfaction’ to mark International Women’s Day. It’s a little bit amazing. Satisfaction came out in 2002, by the way.
