Local Elections Wrap-Up

The results of yesterday’s fourth democratic municipal elections started trickling in late last night, after a very long, but mostly quiet day of voting. There were long lines, some scanner problems and one or two questions raised here and there.

Update: The ANC Is Disappointed And Puzzled Over “Shoot The Boer” Ruling

The ANC says that it is “extremely disappointed and puzzled” by yesterday’s high court ruling refusing it leave to appeal an earlier finding that the song “Shoot the Boer” is an incitement to murder. It has decided it’s time to take it to a higher court.

ANC And City Of Cape Town Arguing About Posters

This is a little like me not being allowed to have posters up in my bedroom, but less serious: the ANC has lodged a complaint with the Electoral Commission after Cape Town city workers were found removing COSATU posters campaigning for Tony Ehrenreich. Because they want their posters back, apparently.

Shitstorm: ANC Forced To Admit They Knew About Unenclosed Toilets

Following the ANCYL’s attempt at taking the DA to court over unenclosed toilets in the Western Cape, ANC Free State secretary Sibongile Basani admitted yesterday that the ANC had been aware of the same problem in the Rammulotsi, an area under ANC control, “in July last year.” This despite the party’s frequent claims of ignorance.

Any statue or symbol of apartheid South Africa is cool, just not Verwoerd, says ANC spokesman Jackson Mthembu. He made the statement in response to the furore over the removal of the statue in the DA-controlled Midvaal municipality in Meyerton.

Police had to step in yesterday when a group of ANC supporters attempted to stop a DA rally from taking place in the Mamelodi Township in Pretoria. This is just a blip on the South African political radar that will quickly be forgotten, but it gave me pause for thought.

You have to give this guy some credit for thinking out of the box – posters tied to lamp posts are getting old. But choosing a funeral to tell everyone to vote for the ANC is just plain wrong. Especially if the woman in the front row just lost her husband and seven-year-old triplets all in one go.

As if gangsterism in the Western Cape wasn’t bad enough, I was as shocked as anyone to find out that Planning Minister, and former Minister of Finance, Trevor Manuel is a hardened gangster whose open letter accusing Jimmy Manyi of being a racist, may have unleashed the full wrath of Jacob Zuma’s best friend.

If you haven’t heard yet, government spokesman, Jimmy Manyi said recently that he thinks that there is an oversupply of coloured folk in the Western Cape, and that perhaps it is best if they’d shift around a bit. He made the remarks on kykNET last year when he said: “So this over-concentration of coloureds in the Western Cape is not working for them.”

The party, which was celebrated on the eve of the ANC’s election manifesto, has left our leader with the daunting task of explaining the incident to not one wife, but three. You may know by now that top cop and original Gansta, Bheki Cele, has been found guilty by Public Protector Thuli Madonsela of improper conduct for entering into a R500 million lease for a Pretoria building intended to host a new SAPS headquarters. But luckily for him, his good friends in government have his back.
