The regional ban on bullfighting, which was approved at the end of last year, goes into effect in January.
Capetonians and Joburgers alike struggle to get around the metropolis of Johannesburg. There are a number of significant shortcuts that can make your life easier, and will allow you to decide where to have that meeting. Like Melrose Arch, for example. THAT’S where you should have all your future meetings. And I’ll show you how […]
With a name like Doña Maria del Rosario Cayetana Alfonsa Victoria Eugenia Francisca Fitz-James Stuart y Silva, 18th Duchess of Alba, one might excuse her for looking like a struck match. Clearly someone does, seeing as the twice-widowed aristocrat is getting remarried to Alfonso Diez, a man 24 years her junior. The news was announced after she bequeathed every penny she owns, to her children.
The Draft Dangerous Weapons Bill, published recently in the government gazette, has been taking heavy criticism this morning. With a bit of luck, the badly worded document, which seeks to ban things like toy guns, will have statements like this removed: “…any object that can cause injury or have the ability to take a person temporarily ‘out of action.'”
File photo: Sunday Times This weekend, the Sunday Times reported that a yacht, owned by Mmamolanewane Accommodation Holdings had been moved in the dead of night to a secret location. During a speech over the weekend in Germany, the Pope warned of threats posed by abortion and gay marriage. He said that Christian churches “must walk side by side” in the battle against church values. He also added that we must defend the “integrity and the uniqueness of marriage between one man and one woman.”
As the “Occupy Wall Street” protests enter their ninth day, an increasing number of videos and photos have begun surfacing, showing near-indiscriminate use of tasers, mace and kenneling by the NYPD on demonstrators, who are protesting a financial system that apparently favours the wealthy and powerful over ordinary citizens.
I don’t answer private numbers. Nor do a lot of people I know. But a lot of them haven’t reached my elite level. The “elite communicator” level is where you find yourself when you have absolutely zero curiosity as to who might be calling. You’re over it. You’re so far gone, that you only answer […]
This week’s re-make is less a strict film re-make, and more the graduation of a classic television interpretation to the big screen, and considering how well acclaimed the original story is, it’s quite surprising this hasn’t happened sooner: Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy
Kenya’s Wangari Maathai has died while undergoing cancer treatment in Nairobi at the age of 71. An activist for conservation, transformation and women’s rights, she was the first African woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize.
The Sydney Morning Herald is reporting that an Australian technologist, Nik Cubrilovic, has discovered that Facebook is tracking the websites its users visit even when they have logged out of the social networking site. Reactions have been mixed, but is this something we should be that surprised about?
No More Anonymous ‘Defriending’ On Facebook – With a slew of cosmetic changes and tweaks, Facebook users could be forgiven for getting a little frustrated over the last few days. But the social network’s new Timeline feature looks set to really enrage users after it emerged the ability to anonymously ‘defriend’ people will become a thing […]
The New Age did a cool article on our Johannesburg studio. Ian F and the gang have been waking up the upwardly mobile on 2oceansvibe Radio for over a month now. This, from The New Age: Ian F is, simply put, a South African radio legend. With a career spanning nearly two decades, he’s pretty […]
Oh, you’ve only heard of it? Not good enough, my friends. This new puppy is getting a few tongues wagging. Questions are being raised, like: Is it awesome? Is it awful? Is it hot, or am I labouring under the burden of car beer goggles? Well, until such time as you get your hands on […]
A hero This Saturday 24 September is National Braai Day. There are a few hours left, so you really need to get your act together and you need to get ready. Check braai equipment, snap up that meat from butchery, find friends, and decide where you will be braaing. In places like New Zealand, it’s […]
What were you doing today my friends? Working? I should hope not. Because, as you’ll know by now, a Friday done Jack’s way involves little to no work at all. And that’s what these lucky rascals in the video below were doing two weeks ago, as winners of our Monthly Friday Done Jack’s Way Competition, […]
The occasional airport comes kitted with sleeping lounges, but not everyone can get into those lounges. So, that’s what Sleepbox is for. Sleepbox is a temporary bedroom for the average traveler, that can be rented for periods of time while you’re tired and hanging around at the airport.
South African broadcasters are planning to launch their digital terrestrial television (DTT) offering in April next year. All except the SABC, that is. They want R1,6 billion from the government to make it happen, as well as R90 million for “marketing”, and also another R145 million for a “new digital master control centre.” No word yet on when they are actually going to start making decent shows.
It’s Friday, so come get your secondhand vertigo on and watch this Russian adrenaline junkie scale the 133 meter “Stalin’s skyscraper,” near Krasnye Vorota, without any sort of safety gear. The camera’s mounted on the climber’s head, so I guess he had a helmet, but I’m not sure that counts at 133 metres.
Raise your hand if a taxi has ever put your life in danger. At the recent launch of Transport Month in Richard’s Bay, Santaco president Jabulani Mthembu made it clear that he is fully behind Transport Minister S’bu Ndebele’s call for a speed limit reduction. He’s also urging motorists to stop “rushing” on our roads. Rich.
Starting today, praying in the streets of Paris is against the law. The French interior minister warned that police will use force if anybody disobeys the new rule to keep the French capital’s public spaces secular. However, people have been defying the law all morning.
We all have our lapses of judgment. But some of us make such horrendously poor decisions that one simply has to ask, “What were they on?”. Every week we bring you three contenders in what can only be described as a battle of small wits. So, with great pleasure we present this week’s three La […]
As of April this year, it is illegal to wear a face-covering veil or other maskings in public places in France. Things are about to get even more interesting, as Kenza Drider declared her candidacy for the French presidency yesterday. And she did it wearing a burqa. She also showed off a campaign poster of a veiled woman standing in front of a line of police.
It’s always nice when the world catches up with 80’s sci-fi films. Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, have succeeded in reconstructing people’s visual experiences using MRI and image libraries. Which means that if you click on the link you can see somebody’s brain try to replicate the Pink Panther film trailer.
NASA have meekly announced that their 6.5 tonne Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS), which shut down in 2005 due to its batteries dying, will come crashing down to earth sometime today, somewhere.
This is exactly what Cape Town needs. A committee whose sole purpose is to reconcile relations between the city’s residents and baboons. Capetonians have lived in fear of their sandwiches being stolen for long enough.

Steve Morris caught up with Robbie Fleck yesterday and discussed everything to do with the World Cup. While the world fusses over another American execution, Iran has publicly hanged a 17-year-old boy for stabbing to death their “strongest man”. The boy begged for forgiveness and professed he had done it in self-defence, but not even an 11th-hour plea by Amnesty International for a stay of execution could stop it.
