“Probably not,” is the answer. It seems as if things have returned to normal on the Facebook servers around parts of Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. The outage earlier affected facebook.com, as well as apps for mobile phones and tablets. Facebook has thus far put the incident down to “technical difficulties.”
If a nice cup of tea, a dry scone and a fascinating game of chess against one of those electronic Kasparov chessboards sounds like a great night in… Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is your movie. Slow-moving, dull, dreary and stoney-faced – this Cold War club for stiff cigar room suits makes the dense two hour plod as inviting as […]

A new website, called Dollar Shave Club, just launched. What are they all about? Look, I can tell you – or you can watch this video. The level of awesomeness you are about to experience knows no boundaries. Check it out inside.
Formula One race cars are intended for many things – being awesome, making loud noises, giving Germans something to do. Driving on snow is not one of them. In spite of that, Andy Gülden equipped one with snow tires and drove it around the snow-covered race tracks of the famously challenging Nürburgring in Germany. Madness.
As the Olympic Games draw nearer, organisers have made the almost 70 000 volunteers assisting at the Olympiad take a sensitivity quiz to assess their readiness to meet a variety of different people that will be visiting London. Given that this is England, you can bet some of their responses were not… er, productive.
This really does look like a scene from a horrific, science-fiction film in which spiders take over the world. Unfortunately for arachnaphobes, and most of Wagga Wagga’s population, it’s very real, and is the result of spiders escaping floodwaters.
Recently on show at the Geneva Auto Exhibition, Bentley has done it again. This is the 9F – a monstrous V12 SUV from the luxury car manufacturer. Climate change? What climate change? We’ve got a full gallery of this beast to show you – just click on “continue reading.”
I remember a couple years ago The Muse and I were entertaining an Oscar-winning movie star in Cape Town. I specified the Oscar-winning part for you to understand that she has probably had experience with top service and food. So she and her boyfriend were 100% down to earth and we did some cool things, […]

Inge Peacock, owner of local fashion label Lulu Tan Tan, made an urgent application to the Western Cape High Court to stop Noseweek from publishing a story about her, entitled “Fashion Victim.” Unfortunately that didn’t work out for her. News24 had this to say: The article, titled “Fashion Victim”, involves businesswoman Inge Peacock – creator […]
This might turn out to be the most inspiring documentary you will watch all year. A serious campaign is underway to bring down Joseph Kony, the infamous leader of the Ugandan guerrilla group: the Lord’s Resistance Army. The LRA is responsible for an unquantifiable number of atrocities across Uganda. Human trafficking, brutal rape, and child soldier deployment are commonplace. This is KONY 2102.
Another alternative to Apple’s iCloud popped up this week, with Google has announcing that it will be combining the Android Market, Google Music and the Google eBookstore into a new cloud-based service called Google Play, allowing users to access all of their media across all of their Android devices.
Recently, the ANC released a wad of discussion documents that will lead the various policy discussions at its upcoming National Electoral Conference this year. One of them outlines a startling plan to reshuffle and re-organise South Africa’s provinces to “ensure more functionality, economic viability and racial/ethnic integration”. So what exactly does that mean?
Sometime last year, IBM created a brand new supercomputer, called Watson. The idea was ho have him try and beat a human competitor at the popular game show, Jeopardy. He did this without retrieving any information off the internet, and based all knowledge on the information fed into the system. He won, too. Watson is now employed by Citigroup.

This is pretty impressive. Think about those sporting events that turn out completely different to what you thought they would at the beginning. But then it’s too late – you’ve made your bet. Imagine being able to get an idea of how the Super 15 players are playing on a particular day, before making your […]
While this chap’s bill at Liverpool’s Playground nightclub included a R1.5 million bottle of bubbly, I am even more impressed with the 42 cans of Pussy energy drink which he included in that haul. Clearly the 2oceansvibe energy drink partner is held in the same high regard over in the UK. Check this story out. […]
In a shocking move from ICASA, the communications regulator in South Africa, a hold has been put on its applications to allocate frequencies to various local cell providers. Our local wildlife can be very… independent minded. A giraffe and a baboon have made separate headlines today for their remarkably free-thinking behaviour.
The SABC has had plans to launch a new channel for a while. It has now announced that its new channel will again attempt an April 1 launch. And no, that’s no April Fool’s joke like last time. They’re serious this time. The channel will be a 24-hour news channel, and will be launched in conjunction with MultiChoice.
Oh, good, more things from the future to terrify me. Boston Dynamics, a Pentagon contractor, has broken the speed record for legged robots, with a new four-legged creation – the Cheetah, which can run at 29 kilometres an hour, far outpacing the 20 km/h record set by MIT in 1989.
It was a late summer’s afternoon in Johannesburg. I was dead on my feet. I’d been pounding the pavements of Jozi’s mean streets for a full eight hours, cashing checks and breaking necks. I was out of the car, and straight to my hotel room. Shoes off, aircon on full blast, lemon twist in hand, […]
