Big wave surfing is not for the feint of heart. That amount of water carries a hell of a lot of weight, and one slip up can lead to a terrible encounter with a wall of watery death. Garrett McNamara, a big wave surfer from Hawaii has just broken the world record for the biggest wave ever surfed. Video after the jump.
Hoo. Santa Cruz surfer Barbara Roettger got way up close and personal with a pod of humpback whales when she unwittingly found herself in the middle of a lunge feeding session; two massive whales popped up right next to the surfer and her kayak friends, seemingly out of nowhere. It’s pretty rad.
Check out this video of a surfer in California hitting up some night surf accompanied by the soft tumbling glow of bio-luminescent algae in the waves.
That is what you’re going to tell your buddies you did today. You’re going to tell them that Jordy Smith, SA’s own WORLD NUMBER 2 surfer (did I mention the whole world?) is surfing against World #1 Kelly Slater at the Quiksilver Pro in France. Not that it’s a problem. Jordy Smith has been known […]
Chris Anderson, graphic design student, is installing 1 000 broken surfboards in the sands of a Sydney beach to inform people of the unsustainable practices in surfboard manufacturing. I’m not sure how breaking a thousand surfboards helps this problem, but the installation looks pretty cool.
Africa’s top surfer, and world #2 ranked surf athlete, Jordy Smith will be making a guest appearance on 2oceansVibe Radio‘s Morning Meeting at 10h00 on Monday morning. He’s fresh off a back to back victories in J-Bay. Be sure to tweet us your song requests and any questions you have for Jordy. Click here to […]
There was a fair amount of sport to watch this past weekend, but I was particularly looking forward to watching the closing rounds of the Billabong Pro surfing event that was on at J-Bay in the Eastern Cape. Jordy Smith had been surfing well and it looked like he could make the final. He did, and he won, again.
Now I should clarify here, Norwegian kitesurfers in blouwberg are siesa. And by “siesa” I of course mean “an intoxicating mix of insanity, skill, and bravery”. Yesterday, Nick Jacobsen climbed up a crane on the deck of the now-permanently wrecked Seli I, with his kite and his board, and jumped off. Nuts.
We have got 2 two A4-size photographs (not the above pic), taken by top SA surf photographer, Anthony Fox – and signed by World #2 Surf Champion, SA’s very own Jordy Smith. To win one of these signed prints, tell us what vinyl track Jordy asked to be played during our interview and why you […]
Alright, so that title may be pushing it, especially considering that the world #2 hasn’t claimed his first ASP World Tour title yet (clue: he will, this year), but with pro surf photographer Ant Fox, Seth and Bruce Good in attendance, it was a pretty darn fine interview.
Follow the link to get the full interview.
Having never met before, SA cricket captain, Graeme Smith and SA surf champ, Jordy Smith, finally met at Cafe Caprice this week. Apparently they were downing 2oceansvibe cocktails all night. Because that’s how they….? *Have you spotted any celebs around town? Send ’em through and you will be rewarded 😉
So summer’s here folks. I’m not sure if you’ve been noticing the incremental increase in temperature, the gradually lengthening days, the proliferation of billionaires on yachts off of Clifton – the usual tell tale indicators that a change has been effected in the seasons. And you know what? Maybe, just maybe its time you learned to surf
The seventh annual Wavescape Surf Film Festival is upon us, girls and boys. To avoid missing out on the event that will undoubtedly set the scene for a most successful summer, click through. We promise you good news, and very, very pretty pictures.
There is a pretty cool tradition recognised by surfers around the world, called a ‘paddle out.’ It is usually performed in recognition or as a memorial to fallen surfers. With the recent untgimely death of surf legend Andy Irons, surfers the world over performed paddle-outs in silent tribute to their fallen brother. Video after the jump.
While Andy Irons’ sudden death was initially believed to be a result of the mosquito-borne virus, Dengue Fever, which his family said he was suffering from, some news sources are reporting that the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office is investigating a possible overdose.
A few of the boys went on a surf trip to Mentawi a few weeks back. The Photographer, VC, set his camera to video mode and absolutely KILLED it with this video! An absolute must-see for couch surfers and real surfers alike! Keep an eye out for Dirty Skirts lead guitarist, David Moffatt, frolicking about!
I hope you get this in time because it is off the hizzo! It’s the Rip Curl Pro and if Kelly Slater wins he gets his 10th title and will retire. If South Africa’s Jordy Smith wins, he will be number 1 in the world! What a beautiful way to see the afternoon through! Tune in after the jump!
2oceansvibe has long had a special relationship with Kommetjie and the people that dwell therein. Shit, the main reason why we have a surf report on 2oceansvibe Radio is to look after the Kom Skom and the 2oceansvibe Characters that surf that place ‘stukkend.’ And that’s why we’re urging you to show your support for the ‘Save Kommetjie’ campaign. They’re throwing a party. A MASSIVE party.
2oceansvibe Radio is pleased to announce the addition of a daily surf report to the morning lineup! Spike and Chris from Wavescape will be joining the team around 08h30 for a surf-fresh update, telling you where the waves are pumping and which ‘break’ is more ‘mondo’ than the next! Checkout the rest of the lineup & tune-in after the jump!
It’s that time of year again, as we welcome the shores of Jeffreys Bay to some of the hottest surfers on the planet. And yes, that does include Christian Kevin Kelly Slater and Wilbur Jordy Smith! 2oceansvibe Character, The Surfer, has been in the water over the last few days for his photoblog, “Welcome To […]
Surfing brand Hurley has put together a competition, which is making people do some crazy things. I received the following pics from a 2oceasviber. WTF? Baking! It’s alive! Nicely.. The surfer’s name is Tom Catilin (Cape Town boy, part of the “Llandudno crew” I am told) and the pics were taken by one Bourne Buirski. […]
Back in Feb we told you about one of our favourite SA big wave surfers, Chris Bertish, who completely beat the odds and won the world’s most prestigious big wave surfing event, “Mavericks.” No, it has nothing to do with Top Gun: 15-02-2010 Chris Bertish Wins Mavericks Big-Wave Surf Compo – We mention Chris Bertish […]
2oceansvibe Character, Gigi O’Connor (The Interior Decorator) recently returned from a harrowing (yet absolutely hilarious) holiday in Tofu, Mozambique. Those of you who know The Interior Decorator will be keenly aware that roughing it is not exactly in her top five pasttimes. Her blog, Dominico House, and line of work suggests that Gigi enjoys the […]
2oceansvibe Character, “The Surfer” (Anthony Fox) is fast becoming the number one surf photographer in South Africa as we see his latest reel appearing on non-other than online surfer’s bible, Magic Seaweed. 32 photographs were showcased in a thorough photo-report format. It was pretty well received to, with over 120,000 views in the first two […]
2oceansvibe Character “The Surfer” (turned surf photographer), AKA Anthony Fox, has nailed it again with his fish like skills behind the camera. Not that fish are good at taking photographs, but because he is usually in the middle of a wave with a board coming towards his nose as he snaps the shots! His gallery […]
2oceansvibe’s disdain for cycling fraternity’s need to expose their balls (especially when there are children around) and wear their cycling helmets in and around public retail outlets is well documented. It comes as a surprise to see that surfers are falling into the same public disgrace trap. SURFERS! Of all people! I was under the […]
Edward Aikau was a well-known Hawaiian lifeguard and surfer. As the first lifeguard at Waimea Bay on the island of Oahu, he saved many lives and became famous for surfing the big Hawaiian surf, winning several awards including the 1977 Duke Kahanamoku Invitational Surfing Championship. Eddie Aikau In memory of Eddie, came the Quiksilver Eddie […]
SA #1 and future World Surf Champion, Jordy Smith , gives us another reason to like his vibe. He’s obviously got TONS of surfboards in his “quiver,” but I did not realise that each of his boards has a girl painted it. A different girl for every board. He doesn’t call them his “boards,” he […]
2oceansvibe Character, The Roofer , had a little surf at Dungeons yesterday. No stranger to big wave surfing, this should have been like any other wave – big speed, big “green room” etc. Pic by Richard Johnson Unfortunately not so this time.. From Zig Zag‘s website: Things can turn ugly very quickly at Dungeons Reef. […]
Taken by The Surfer off the coast of South Africa. A moment in time with the TBG (Tall Blonde Guy). The TBG (Tall Blonde Guy) So poised and graceful, the global icon and shark whisperer is just at home in water, as he is on land and in the air.
