Calling beach bums everywhere: it’s time to get excited about the Wavescape Film Festival. If you love the ocean, the great outdoors, and surfing, it’s the place for you. In 2012 over 3,000 people attended, and the festival raised R240 000 for ocean preservation. This year, it’s set to be even bigger and better.
When it comes to breaking records, some choose the safer route: opting to put straws in their mouths. Some, on the other hand, enjoy being towed into 30-metre waves by a jetski. This was the gambit of one Carlos Burle, in an attempt to break the world record for biggest wave ever surfed, held by Garret McNamara, who successfully carved a 23-metre behemoth just two years ago.

Cape Town surfer, Brett Archibald, was rescued after floating in the Indonesian ocean for 27 hours. Archibald reportedly fell from a boat in the early hours of Wednesday morning and was rescued by a Sydney-owned private charter boat.

A 25-year old was killed on Sunday afternoon while wading in waist-deep water just off Second Beach at Port St. Johns. This marked the sixth fatal attack on the beach in as many years, and has earned the beach the title of “most dangerous in the world” for such incidents.
