Vata Ngobeni, a South African rugby journalist, was detained by police in a New Zealand pub last night. According to the officer who took him into custody, he “fitted the profile of a drug dealer.” Ngobeni happened to be the only black person in the venue at the time. He was also the only one that was asked to take a trip downtown. Awkward.
The painting, by artist Don Little, was painted in the style of a Russian Orthodox icon and shows a haloed Jesus wearing and All Blacks jersey as he dispenses blessings, while clutching a white rugby ball. Talk about dedication. And maybe a little wishful thinking.
The first intimidating “Ka Mate” was preformed by the All Blacks in 1905, and has been considered an important part of international rugby ever since. But, because of recent flash hakas in shopping centres, streets and schools across New Zealand, De Villiers said that New Zealanders risked overexposing the dance as they host this year’s tournament.
In the evening following England’s marginal victory over Argentina in their opening game of the 2011 Rugby World Cup, members of the English squad (including management) hit the town, to blow off the significant quantities of steam that are typically generated by a mediocre victory. Extra-marital boob-groping may or may not have ensued.
The Blokes On The Couch have finalised the commentary schedule for the World Cup and we can confirm that the following games will enjoy live streaming commentary on 2oceansvibe Radio – listen online there or download your mobile streaming app (iPhone/Blackberry/Android) at www.2ov.fm. Egg and bacon burger for 60 bucks, or Steak, egg and chips for under a hundred? Shame, they’ve made it terribly easy for us..
Look, let’s not beat around the bush here. We are a confident nation, and we do like to win. But, we don’t jinx ourselves here in South Africa. Especially when it comes to something like playing a Rugby World Cup in New Zealand, because, well, that’s just silly. Gautrain marketing department, we’ll remember this if anything happens.
John Smit dropped us this little gem of pre-Rugby World Cup media. Enjoy it with your midmorning coffee.
In just under four days the Rugby World Cup kicks off in New Zealand. And, as you’ll see inside, people are finding all kinds of creative ways to show their excitement! Treat yourself to a very impressive “haka flash mob” as well as a rugby remake of “Living Next Door To Alice” after the jump.
Steve discusses the new Springbok squad. In particular Odwa Ndungane, Ruan Pienaar, Sarel Pretorious, Johann Muller, the tighthead selection and Francois Louw. Luke Watson comes up.. as well as Steve’s thoughts on our chances winning the World Cup.
A true 2oceansviber, Charl D, just sent me this. It’s basically all you need for the 2011 Rugby World Cup. All the fixtures, teams and times – BOOM – straight into your calendar with one click! Shame, we really do spoil you here, don’t we? Note – this is for iCal (ie. Mac). If You […]
The Currie Cup is South Africa’s most venerable sporting tournament. With a rich history spanning 122, there has been more than enough time for victories to be savoured, for rivalries to be forged, and for countless bitter tears to be wept. It all comes from passion, the passion that the fans show for their team. […]
Travellers to next month’s Rugby World Cup may be pleased to discover that Air New Zealand has recently launched its ‘cuddle class’ seats. A redesign of the Boeing 777-300 now allows economy class travellers to lie flat for the first time on a long haul flight. A lovely idea, as long as you’re not very tall.
What’s wrong with this picture? Does he get bonus points if the kick is especially difficult? And by whose judgment? Are we talking Dan Carter difficult, or JP Pietersen difficult? Does he get extra statistical percentage points if slots a kick while blindfolded, under the influence of prescription pain medication, or with a backheel? Help […]
The Bench, 2oceansVibe Radio‘s popular weekly sports and lifestyle show, will be broadcasting live from Caveau in Newlands on Saturday as part of the build-up to the Springboks’ second Tri-Nations Test of the year against the All Blacks. One a debonair and clean cut playboy and the other not, Crispin “Chowgaps” Inglis and Howie Kahn […]
Our literary correspondent, Bruce Manley, got his hands on Dan Retief’s incredibly popular book, The Springboks And The Holy Grail. Click through for a review of the book, and an interview of Dan by Ian F on 2oceansVibe Radio’s Ian F Show.
This is the latest Mastercard ad, running on New Zealand television at the moment – ahead of the 2011 Rugby World Cup. Pretty cool that they talk about the 1995 World Cup without mentioning anything about food poisoning. Follow the link to check it out.
The Springboks customarily receive a flurry of questions from Australian media, and a warm welcome from South African expats, when landing in Sydney. Not so much yesterday, when they arrived at around 8pm local time to be greeted by green and gold wearing…crickets. “Where is everybody?” joked captain John Smit.
Moments after John Smit announced he would be leaving the Sharks and joining English club side Saracens for two seasons after the 2011 World Cup, well-known author and rugby pundit, Dan Retief weighed in with his opinion on Twitter. Smit replied, with a perfectly weighted volley of wit. Check out the tweets after the jump.
As The Rugby World Cup draws near, an important part of the psychological preparation of any team is knowing that their nation is behind them. And what could be an easier way of showing your love and support in this age of pressurised, desk-bound work than with the combined tools of the the interwebs, and […]
As a stormers fan, one can hardly be upset by last Saturday’s shellacking at The hands of New Zealand’s finest. For starters they were so vastly superior in every facet of the game that you could hardly hold it against them. They played rugby that was a joy to watch, they were infinitely more physical than us and they had an ingredient in spade loads that we seemed to lack, that is that “they started with the why”.
After what seems like an eternity, my good friend Mikhail will finally have to stop bitching about the fact that Sharks forward, Jean Deysel, has been left out of the Springbok squad.
Originally published in August 2010, it seems appropriate to drag this column back to the surface. Ricky Januarie has announced his retirement from international rugby, with the intention of cashing in on a few Francs and frites by playing club rugby for french club, Lyon. Ricky Januarie is a classic example of why a lack […]
Having reviewed most positions over the last 10 weeks, the time has come to select my Bok squad and starting XV for this year’s Rugby World Cup tournament in New Zealand in September/October. I do not suggest that these are the players I would start in the Tri-Nations – we should consider resting senior players […]
Looking at the lock forwards that Peter de Villiers should take to the World Cup is a quick and easy discussion. Victor Matfield and Andries Bekker cover the number five jersey / four-jumper position as arguably the two best lineout options in world rugby, while Bakkies Botha and Dannie Rossouw should be named as your two-jumpers in the four jersey. But what about Juan?
2oceansVibe Radio’s The Bench (08h00 – 10h00 every Saturday) have managed to pull it off again! Jonathan Kaplan, full-time international rugby union referee and current holder of the record for the most international matches as referee, will be joining Chowgaps and Howie on air to chat about all things Super 15 and World Cup. We’re […]
New Zealand police are investigating CCTV video footage from a Dunedin pub where the Lions rugby team celebrated their Super 15 win over the Highlanders on Saturday. An 18-year-old woman has claimed that she was sexually assaulted and that the incident involved a Lions player.
