Last night saw the closing ceremony of the Paralympics in London. Coldplay performed and were joined by Rihanna and Jay-Z. Their song “Paradise” has become the the unofficial anthem of the Games over the past 12 days. This year saw 4 200 Paralympians from 164 different countries take part. All the action inside.

The organisers of the 2012 Paralympics are worried about 300 athletes – 7% of all competitors – who are “bending the rules” in order to compete in classes where they are more likely to win gold medals.
“There have been times where I would specifically give my leg or my toe a couple of really good electric shocks. That would make my blood pressure jump up and I could do more weights and cycle harder – it is effective.”
How’s this for a new low? The King of Jordan intervened in the case of three of his country’s Paralympians accused of sex crimes. The men – two wheelchair powerlifters and a trainer – are accused of sexual assault and voyeurism against women and CHILDREN. However, thanks to King Abdullah they were freed yesterday to compete in next week’s Paralympic Games.
The 400-metre world record holder, Michael Johnson, says he believes disabled athletes who use prosthetic limbs should NOT be allowed to compete in able-bodied races. This after news broke of Oscar Pistorius’ qualification for this year’s Olympics. Johnson argues that as it has not been disproved whether or not it provides such athletes with an unfair advantage.

Oscar Pistorius has won the 2012 Laureus World Sportsperson of the Year with a Disability Award. This after he became the first amputee to win a non-disabled World Championship track medal, as a member of the South African silver medal winning 4 x 400 metres relay team in South Korea.
