DA Lashes Out Against ‘Draconian’ New Weather Bill

There’s a storm rapidly brewing over a very contentious amendment to the South African Weather Service Bill. The Democratic Alliance has slammed the “undesirable” and “draconian” sections on the grounds that they are a threat to the safety of all South Africans and would create an unfair monopoly over weather forecasting.

Investec Establishing €100 Million Energy Fund

Investec has joined forces with the European Investment Bank to establish a funding facility that will promote energy efficiency and the generating of clean energy in South Africa. The venture will be rolled out to support various kinds of renewable energy projects across the country.

Anxious Bangkok Prepares For Month Long Floods

Anxious Bangkok residents are steeling themselves against floods moving down from the northern part of Thailand, which are the worst to hit the country in decades. With Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra keeping everyone on edge with statements such as “I’m fifty percent confident that the inner zone of Bangkok will not be completely flooded,” it must be increasingly difficult to remain buoyant.

Tornadoes Tear Across The South African Interior [PICS]

Hundreds of homes were destroyed when a tornado tore through the town of Ficksburg in the Free State province yesterday afternoon, emergency officials said. At least one person was killed, but the full extent of the damage is not yet known. Last night, a second tornado hit the East Rand and caused extensive damage to Duduza, near Nigel.

Durban Air Show Coordinator On Missing George’s Valley Plane

One of the passengers on the two light aircraft that went missing in George’s Valley, Limpopo, is a Durban air show coordinator, according to organisers. They won’t release a name however, out of respect for the person’s family.

At around lunch time yesterday, two light aircraft travelling from Limpopo to Gauteng’s Rand Airport simply disappeared off the radar. Between 12 and 14 passengers, including some kids, were on board when the planes departed after an airshow in Tzaneen.

A massive sand storm, called a “Haboob”, wreaked havoc in Phoenix, Arizona when it came roaring through the desert like an apocalyptic nightmare on Tuesday night. The massive storm resulted in absolute chaos, delaying flights and causing power outages across the city.

While the rest of South Africa spent last night enjoying the lunar eclipse, Cape Town was battered by a storm that dropped as much as 50mm of rain in the space of a few hours in places. The storm was accompanied by gale force winds and lighting that have caused widespread damage in parts of the city.
