Sudden Volcano Eruption Causes Mass Evacuation [PICS]

Yesterday afternoon, Guatemala’s Volcán de Fuego (Volcano of Fire), an active volcano near Antigua, Guatemala unexpectedly began erupting, causing panic and the forced evacuation of over 33 000 people. The eruption caused volcanic ash to fall more than half a kilometre down the mountain.

Holy rocks and ash! Mount Tongariro, located in the central North Island of New Zealand, has erupted after lying dormant for 115 years. The eruption brings with it a massive cloud of ash, 115 years worth, reminding us all of the chaos of Eyjafjallajökull. Luckily it’s not so serious this time around.

Horror Train Crash In Mpumalanga, Bodies Strewn Over 200m

Rescue workers at the scene of a horrific accident involving a train and a truck in Mpumalanga are having a hard time determining the extent of the damages. Officials say that identifying bodies is proving difficult as many have been torn up by the impact, with some being thrown as far as 200m.

Heavy rains and winds lashed Cape Town and its surrounds over the weekend, causing widespread damage and havoc for residents. As of this morning, disaster response teams had assisted 2 566 people in the flood-stricken areas with social relief.

A Japanese parliamentary panel has said in a report that the crisis at the Fukushima nuclear plant was “a profoundly man-made disaster”, and that the disaster “could and should have been foreseen and prevented”. The report also blamed cultural conventions and a reluctance to question authority.

The Eihatsu Maru was successfully towed off Clifton’s First Beach by maritime authorities yesterday. The Smit Amandla tug worked tirelessly for hours to free the stricken vessel.
Eyewitness News’s Aletta Gardner was on hand to record the moment life along Victoria Road returned to normal.

First Photo Of Clifton Trawler Pulled Away From The Beach – It Worked!

The Eihatsu Maru has been successfully towed off Clifton’s First Beach by maritime authorities today. The Smit Amandla tug worked tirelessly for hours to free the stricken vessel that ran aground last Saturday morning in thick fog.
It brings to a close an agonising six days of salvage attempts by officials, who twice previously failed to remove the stricken vessel.

It’s taken long enough for Japanese officials to step up to the plate and offer South African Authorities their assurances that they will do everything they can to locate the stricken vessel’s owner. After a slight mishap overnight, Samsa confirmed to 2oceansVibe a little while ago that salvage experts were putting the finishing touches together for an operation at lunchtime today.

SA Will Foot Bill For Salvaging Stranded Japanese Vessel

South Africa is going to foot the bill for salvaging the Japanese fishing vessel currently stranded on Clifton First beach, according to the SA Maritime Safety Authority (Samsa). The owner of the ship, which ran aground on Saturday and has since moved 25m closer to the shore, has to date refused to cover the costs of the salvage.

Tomorrow, SA Maritime Safety Authorities will make another attempt to remove the stranded Eihatsu Maru from Clifton’s First beach. Last night, 2oceansVibe spoke to one of the men in charge, Samsa’s chief operations officer, Sobantu Tilayi. Many questions still remain about the reasons why the captain grounded the vessel, but Tilayi said the operation has now reached a critical stage.

Clifton Trawler: Grounded On Purpose?

Various officials are currently meeting with the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) to establish a salvage operation for the stranded trawler on Clifton’s First Beach. A source familiar with the maritime industry believes it’s quite unlikely that the vessel wouldn’t have known what it was doing, and that fog would not have played a role in the grounding.

SONY Reports Record Annual Loss of $5,7 Billion

SONY Corporation has declared an annual loss of 457 billion yen ($5,7 billion) in 2011, its fourth straight year of hemorrhaging money, and the worst in its 66-year corporate history. In spite of which, the company – which appointed a new president, Kazuo Hirai last month – is predicting return to profit by the end of 2012.

National Geographic Is Live-Updating Their Mount Everest Ascent [GALLERY]

It’s Mount-Everest-climbing season, apparently – with the National Geographic team attempting to recreate the route used in the first American ascent of the mountain, the 1963 NG-sponsored American Mount Everest Expedition. The team is live-updating their progress online, with a live stream of photos, blog posts, and twitter updates. I think one of them’s using Instagram, too.

Pacific Quake Update: Papua New Guinea Suffers Magnitude 7 Quake, No Tsunami Warning Issued

Seismic instability continues on the Pacific Rim this week with a magnitude 7 earthquake recorded off the coast of Papua New Guinea early this morning (just after 05h00 Australian Eastern Standard Time). The tremor struck at a depth of 202km and was centred 137km north of Lae, Papua New Guinea’s second-largest city.
