In March this year, the Russian feminist punk band Pussy Riot were arrested following an unauthorised performance at Moscow’s main Russian Orthodox cathedral. Part of their performance included chanting: “Mother Mary please drive Putin away.” They have now been sentenced to two years in prison for “hooliganism motivated by religious hatred.”
I don’t know how we missed this one. This is probably the greatest music to come out of the Western Cape in years. This song is called “Wassie Ekke” and has been translated perfectly from Shaggy’s version into Cape Flats-style Afrikaans. Not to be missed!
The world is listening to more and more music online. Either streaming radio, downloading music, or using on-demand services like Spotify and We7. These on-demand services will generate £696 million for the global music industry in 2012 – a rise of 40%, new research has suggested. Artists, however, are complaining that they are getting paid very little despite their tracks getting 10’s of thousands of views.
Wouter “Wally” De Backer, otherwise known as Gotye, has assembled and edited pretty much all the online versions and covers of his song into one mega mashup video. Nearly 1,8 million people have watched this video in the past three days alone! And we have to agree with them, this is pretty awesome.

Poor Madonna. In her ever increasing bid to stay relevant, she seems to be trying every possible trick in the book to shock and keep people talking. From pointing guns at herself on stage, thinly-disguised drug references and costumes that should really not be worn by a 53-year old, she’s now angered the Russians.
I’ve chatted to you before about this film. It’s a documentary made in South Africa and I personally believe it could win an Oscar. It went mental at Sundance and tells the tale of Roriguez, the American singer who was bigger than Elvis in SA, but didn’t shift more than a handful of albums in the States. Watch this trailer.
Paul McCartney, one of the last remaining Beatles, is pretty much as big as it gets when it comes to famous musicians. And accordingly, he can demand pretty much whatever he wants for stadium gigs. Surprising then, that he only earned a single pound for his stellar performance at the extravagant Olympic Opening Ceremony.
Sony hasn’t had the best of times over the last year. The company has been plagued by hacking and monetary woes that ran into the billions. So, it’s hardly surprising the marketing budget has been small for the new Walkman, which is an iPod, dressed like a futuristic hipster.
