Last year, Mango airlines famously became the first South African airline to offer in-flight internet access. Strangely, Mango also became the first South African airline to lie about having internet access on board. Yup, the Advertising Standards Authority has decided that, in order or you to use WiFi access as part of your marketing strategy, you need to actually have WiFi.
If you recall, we posted a story last week about Kanye West’s showstopping proposal to Kim Kardashian. Later, we managed to acquire some actual video footage of the proposal – and it is that video footage that is now involved in a major court case, where Kim K is looking to sue YouTube co-founder Chad Hurley for posting a video of the proposal online at his new Internet venture MixBit.

There have been rumours about this sort of transaction happening for a while now – but sources in Russia have just confirmed that a deal has very definitely been sealed. It’s everyone’s dream job to work at Google, isn’t it? It’s one of the most forward-thinking corporations on earth – the pay is great, the benefits are out of this world, and the working environment is unparalleled anywhere else. Take the Swiss office, for example, where employees spend their days working inside old ski-lifts, and can take a breather in an aquarium equipped with reclining seats. So what’s the downside?
Meet Jean-Philip Grobler, aka St. Lucia. Originally from Johannesberg, St. Lucia grew up performing with the Drakensberg Boys Choir School in KwaZulu-Natal. A while ago we broke the news that Instagram would soon be placing ads in your news feed. Many people were miffed, but many applauded Instagram for allowing users to close the ad once they’ve seen it, and for allowing feedback about how to make ads more aesthetically appealing and personally valuable. The first of what will be a long line of instagram ads appeared on users’ screens last friday, and it was an ad for American designer Michael Kors.
South African-based ad agency, Joe Public, created this masterful campaign for a school in Johannesburg that teaches in both English and Afrikaans. The campaign features a series of posters with poetry on them – that’s not the clever part though. The clever part is that each of the poems can be read word-for-word in both English and Afrikaans, with only slight changes in meaning.
You might not have heard of Balie Bay. It’s a tiny curve in the coast of Camps Bay, and it happens to be bordered by a handful of stunning properties. And you can count this badboy as part of the club. Billed as “sheer 5-star luxury”, this R29 million, four-bedroomed property is basically an elaborate diving board for the ocean – which is what you’ll be calling your pool from now on.
Meet SnapScan. Developed in Stellenbosch, SnapScan is a mobile payment system that uses a combination of QR code recognition and PIN entry for payment of goods and services, without a credit card or cash note ever seeing the light of day. It’s a payment system that could mean the end of grubby banknotes and troublesome change, and we have the lowdown.
Remember the story about a bitcoin ATM opening in Canada? Well, they’ve already installed it and its working as we speak. The machine now lives at Waves Coffee House in Vancouver’s downtown area. It uses palm-recognition for users to log in to their accounts, which is pretty nifty – but could get pretty gross pretty quickly.
Aah the lottery. It’s a bit of a gamble – but every now and then some shmuck out in the middle of nowhere wins the whole shebang. Like this guy, who won over a hundred million rand, spent it, and became a binman. Now, the Florida Lottery says 67-year-old James Bozeman has claimed a R29863500.00 Florida Lotto jackpot just last month.
Judging from initial reviews, it looks as if the iPad Air is just as much a massive leap from the iPad as the MacBook Air was to the Macbook. Apple has challenged itself to produce something fresh, after recent iPads have more or less stayed the same, with the 4th-generation actually being bigger and thicker than its predecessor. Apple wasn’t going to make the same mistake twice – and the iPad Air certainly delivers.
After much anticipation and controversy, the show’s creator and screenwriter, Doug Ellin, has confirmed that the hit show will become a movie. I say anticipation because since the show launched in 2004, it captured everyone’s attention with it’s “one celebrity cameo per show format”, creating a massive worldwide audience.
A very interesting thing happened yesterday and it deteriorated rapidly, as we predicted. It had to do with Land Rover, FNB, a media company called Mindshare and a sex tape.
You know that area just below Gardens Centre? It isn’t really Gardens, or Oranjezicht, and it sure as hell isn’t Downtown. A few weeks ago Name Your Hood officially launched their latest campaign, the naming of Hood 8, AKA ‘That Area Just Below Gardens Centre’ in Cape Town. We’re glad to report that Hood 8 finally has a name: La Guma.
John Paul DeJoria was a hobo – but he always had good taste. Even in his homeless days, he slept in an old Rolls Royce along LA’s Sunset Strip. But he had plans. Years later he finds himself in more comfortable conditions, having founded the stupendously successful Paul Mitchell Systems, and Patron Spirits.
John Julyan is a former Western Cape relationship manager at Barclays Wealth (a division of Absa). He is also a very naughty man. Not “use tax-payers money to buy porn” level of naughty, but more “steal more money than I can carry” kind of naughty. He was so naughty that he was found guilty on Monday of 39 counts of theft, totalling R15 million.

Just prior to their divorce, photographs emerged of Saatchi holding the throat of Lawson at a popular London restaurant. When public sentiment concluded that Saatchi had assaulted Lawson, Nigella maintained absolute silence, cementing the opinion that Saatchi was guilty of abuse.

It must be said – the recession hit us all hard. We’re not as wealthy as we used to be, and won’t be as prosperous as we hoped we would. In particular, the 2008 recession hit men the hardest, and left more men out of work than women. What did this mean? This means that more men were taking on home-keeping tasks like shopping, cooking and cleaning.
