This week I’ll be pairing some wines to three albums that have been occupying my earballs lately. It’s a tad facile. But then it has been shown that music can affect the way we taste wine. Drink, listen, be told a story.
It’s prety damn hot in Cape Town at the moment and there is nothing that says jealous, like people in cars queuing for hours in the 40 degree heat, as a Vespa sails through. It’s 2012 and a new year, so why not make a new year’s resolution that will last a lifetime. Learn to […]
I picked up the latest issue of Rolling Stone magazine on my iPad (using the Zinio app) this weekend and thoroughly enjoyed the interview with chart-topping indie band, Black Keys. Here is an excerpt: Patrick Carney is pretty sure he knows what’s ailing his chosen genre these days. “Rock & roll is dying because people […]
And when I say “under” 500 bucks, I mean just under R500. ie. R499. Which is a helluva lot better than the price they normally sell for, which is R800. That means this deal comes with a discount of nearly 40%. What an epic start to the year! That’s basically what we do for you, […]
We got this heartwarming report from 2oceansviber, Carryn Ortlepp over the weekend. Some people forget to mention they are 2oceansvibers when they use our partners, like Digicape. You really should make a special effort to name drop when you’re around one of our brand partners – this is the kind of stuff that goes down.
Durban, the sweaty sticky place of my birth. Salty, thick air, slops, shorts, bananas and spice. If Capetonians are laid-back, it is because they’re stoned. In Durban people are simply mellow. It’s built in, climatic. It takes longer to walk through the weighty, humid air. As I was buffeted by this wall of jungle breath, and a filmy layer of sweat – that would remain with me for the next 10 days – formed, I wondered what wines would suit such a climate. And, more importantly, where could I get them?
MINI fans will be pleased to know that Frenchman, Stephane Peterhansel is leading the Dakar Rally in Argentina! Check this out from smh: France’s Dakar Rally legend Stephane Peterhansel took the overall lead in the car section in Argentina on Wednesday after winning the fourth stage, a 326km special from San Juan to Chilecito. You played the overseas lottery before and you didn’t win. The lottery rolled over and you bought another ticket. You didn’t win again. So what did you do? You stopped playing. Can I tell you something? The joke’s on you, my friend. Because the very fact that you played the first time meant that you understood […]
Naspers CEO Koos Bekker visited the 2oceansvibe Radio studio on Wednesday morning, on the “Hard Willi” show with Richard Hardiman and Lindsay Williams. Prompted by our own questions, as well as tweets coming in from listeners, Koos covered a range of topics, from radio and print media, to the local and international online landscape. Besides being a […]
In previous columns here I have gone on ad-nauseum about us needing to be more interested in wine. But I thought, maybe I can attack this from the reverse today. If I can get someone to consider the aesthetic of a wine, then maybe it will result in more of an interest. It’s a long shot. You may be thinking that I am being a pretentious wooly-hat-wearing hipster knob-end talking about the aesthetic of wine. I may have to give you the benefit of the doubt; although the wooly hat is very comfortable. Sod it, I’ll give it a go.
As production for the forthcoming film adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s Girl With The Dragon Tattoo got underway in 2010, it was rumoured that heavyweight Hollywood director, David Fincher (Seven, Zodiac, Fight Club, Social Network) had approached Yo-Landi Vi$$er to play the protagonist role of Lisbeth. Vi$$er, who was at the time enjoying world wide acclaim […]
Canvas printing is so hot right now. I’m not going to pretend there isn’t a 50% deal going down at the moment. And I certainly won’t be hiding it from you – after all, our job (when it comes to Groupon) is to tell you about the deals that WE believe will suit you. This […]
What’s the deal with South African Chenin? It has been a variety that I have espoused with vim and vigour since I became a wine consumer of serious proportions. I thought it offered excellent value for money, and offered a range of styles – “I’ll find one for you” I have cried to unbelievers. But had I been fooled by overt sweetness? Was my praise of this variety ill-founded? Had I been hood-winked by easy drinking cheap wines? Did my wallet guide my palate?
Are you a killer sales person? Apart from the copious quantities of commision that you rake in every month, when was the last time you felt truly celebrated? To highlight the hard work done by you and your sales colleagues, Groupon South Africa and 2oceansvibe are hosting the Sales Master 2012 awards. The awards will […]
It’s been over a month since we last chatted about the lottery jackpot being over R1 billion. Regulars will know the reason for that – 2oceansvibe only gets excited about the overseas lottery jackpots when they roll over enough times to give us a Billion Rand or higher jackpot. And that’s exactly what has happened […]
We’re at an interesting juncture with regards to media and, in particular, radio in South Africa. Advertisers have been blowing a load of money on radio for years, hoping that the “shotgun approach” will get the message across to mainstream FM’s listeners. The listenership figures they are working with, are produced by way of the […]
This year, Jack Daniel’s will solve your Christmas gifting dilemmas, with a fantastic range of whiskey products available for the festive season. The Jack Daniel’s Limited Edition Collectors Single Tin offers a unique metallic silver design in dedication to Jack Daniel’s Silver Cornet Band, which was formed in 1892 – an ideal gift for the […]
The MINI E may well be the car that saves the world. It is currently at COP17 – the world’s climate change conference currently underway in Durban. This is quite a special little toy. Let me tell you a bit about it. According to plugincars.com, the 2010 Mini E – an all-electric version of the […]
Time Magazine has published photographs from inside Facebook’s Headquarters – taken shortly after Mark Zuckerburg was made Time Magazine’s Person Of The Year. The photographs reveal a bizarre work place which resembles something closer to The Office, than the fantasy land you might have thought. Sure, they’ve got free snacks and a coke machine, but […]
I was browsing the latest issue of GQ Magazine (US Edition) on my iPad 2 and spotted article about Lonely Island. It had Andy Samberg and co modeling those ridiculous sweaters – like the one Jim Carrey wore in his Aspen dream sequence in the film Dumb & Dumber. I flicked through it and spotted […]
UPDATE: Well done to Steve W – who won the helicopter!! Probably the greatest toy I have ever owned, this little “HELO TC” radio controlled helicopter, by Griffin (and sold at www.digicape.co.za) is now yours to win. It flies so well, you will cry with joy as you make it hover inches from your friend’s […]
The Brothers Streep made their name a couple years back on the Graham Norton show, and since then have quietly weaved their way into underground humour-rock-star status around the world. If you’re lucky, you would have caught the tune they penned recently for the Secrecy Bill – check it out here – pure genius. Just […]
Christmas: a time of drunkenness, praise, and popped shirt buttons. There’s revelry and excess, angels and shepherds, and of course, the fat man in the fur-trimmed getup with a hankering for cookies, milk, and having children on his lap. A weird and wonderful time it is. It is also the time of year that wine columnists all over the world trot out their terribly banal “Top 10 Wines for Christmas” piece. I hate those.
Seriously – you don’t have to be a genius to work out how radical this deal is. There are a lot of Groupon deals out there and we choose the ones that we think will suit the 2oceansvibers out there. Like that one the other day which got you backstage at Kings Of Leon – […]
With over 30,000 downloads of the mobile streaming app so far, 2oceansvibe Radio has announced it’s highest monthly listenership in the last year. While national FM stations decline gradually, true measured stats show a daily listenership of 15,000 for 2oceansVibe Radio. This converts into a weekly listenership of 18,000 single feeds (people) and a total […]
It is common knowledge that human beings have a bizarre attachment to their personal cars that doesn’t extend to other pieces of engineering. Manufacturers cottoned onto this very long ago and changed the simple motor vehicle from being a tool for getting from one point to another conveniently into an expression of individuality and character.
Ho ho ho, boys and girls! Whether you’ve been naughty or nice, Christmas is upon us. Which, for many of you holiday-hogs means only one thing: presents. You’ll be getting them, and you’ll sure as heck be giving them. But Groupon is spreading the Yuletide cheer by giving, while you buy. Every week on Friday, […]
Regular readers and 2oceansvibe Twitter followers will be well aware that I only stay at The Westcliff hotel when I’m in Johannesburg. The beauty of the Westcliff hotel is you actually don’t really need to leave the hotel. And you don’t have to feel bad about it either – because the Westcliff is where you […]
The ink has barely dried on Alan Knott-Craig’s deal to buy MXit, and already we’re seeing new developments in the user experience of South Africa’s biggest social network. You can now buy your favourite Estrela using nothing more than your MXit account.
What is needed is for wine to start appearing in South African popular culture. (Do we have one of those?) Remember that rather kak film, Sideways? That changed how Merlot and Pinot Noir were sold in the States. Just because that snivelly little prick Miles told everyone to “Fuck Merlot”, they did, running to quaff cheap Californian Pinot Noir by the bucket load.
