Pregnant Giraffe Saved From Swimming Pool [VIDEO]

Wild at Heart is a British TV show being shot in South Africa. One of its stars is Lucy, a nine year old pregnant giraffe. This week she fell into a swimming pool on set – forcing rescue workers to demolish it in order to free her. Video after the jump.

SETI Resumes Hunt For Aliens After Six Month Hiatus

The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) was put on hold for six months due to lack of funds – but, following donations from the public and the US Airforce, SETI’s Allen Telescope Array in northern California is operational again. So man, we’re going to feel pretty stupid if aliens called at some point during those six months.

Flying Robots Build Six Metre Tower [VIDEO]

Hello, future. A group of autonomous flying robots – “quadcopters”- have been used in an installation by the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology to construct a six metre tall tower out of 1 500 foam bricks. The robots are completely autonomous, with a networked computer vision system directing the placement of the bricks.

Swiss Study Finds Illegal Downloading Doesn’t Actually Hurt Copyright Holders

In the wake of a worrying shift towards censorship of the internet, this is sort of comforting. A recent study conducted by the Swiss government has found that illegal downloading doesn’t necessarily negatively impact copyright holders, as many downloaders end up purchasing the products anyway – and “illegal” downloading is therefore remaining legal in Switzerland.

He informed the audience that iPhone, Blackberry and Gmail users are all “screwed” – that “the reality is that intelligence operations are selling right now mass surveillance systems for all those products.”

In a worrying move for people who like their internet uncensored, a federal judge in Nevada has ruled that Chanel has the right seize 700 domain names that have been peddling fake Chanel products – and that search engines and social media sites, including Facebook, Twitter, Bing, and Google, are to “de-index” the domains.

This would mean Google maps of airports, shopping malls, and other buildings that you might somehow be able to get lost in.

Akio Toyoda, Toyota’s president, described the freshly-unveiled Fun-Vii as “a smartphone on four-wheels,” which sounds like something you would say to describe a car with lots of gadgets. Except Toyota’s new concept car, unveiled ahead of the Tokyo Auto show is like a smartphone on four wheels because it has giant touchscreen doors.

Nearly 10 000 people dressed up in zombie gore and wandered through Mexico City this weekend, in a bid to set the new world record for zombie walks, which is a thing. Once verified by Guinness, the walk will blaze past the previous record of 4 093 zombies, set in New Jersey last year.

A couple of “Natty Light” enthusiasts approached the brewer, Natural Ice with the idea to make the mediocre frat-house beer slightly more remarkable by making it the first to be sent into space. Their spacecraft’ was a styrofoam cooler, a GPS tracking device, and an HD camera, launched into space with a weather balloon last week.

Google seems to be dabbling in the censorship game too, these days. They’ve added sites like The Pirate Bay, isoHunt, and 4Shared to their “blacklist”, which doesn’t prevent the pages from showing up if searched for, but does prevents the names of sites appearing in their Instant and Autocomplete services.

As part of it’s “off-season spring cleaning,” Google today announced the end of a handful of services, including Google Buzz, Google Wave, and Google Knol. The thinking behind the initiative is to free up resources for Google+ and other higher-priority projects. While some of the shut-downs make sense, others are a little more unexpected.
