Apple’s new patent is for software that would sense when people are trying to film concerts or events with their iPhone, then automatically disable the camera. Over the weekend, Zane Whitmore, a 34-year-old from Seattle, attached himself to a hot air balloon with four piercings across his shoulder blades, and took to the air for a little more than an hour, cruising at just under 3 000 metres. Another South African has scooped a Tony Award for 2011! Last month we told you about Cape Town’s Handspring Puppet Company winning a special award for their theatrical work, but it is Mr. Atholl Fugard who deserves the standing ovation. The 78-year-old theatre maker, with over 30 plays under his belt, walked away last night with a lifetime achievement award. Respect.

Leon Botha, aka DJ Solarize, Dies At Age 26

Painter and musical performer Leon Botha, best known for featuring in the music video of Die Antwoord’s ‘Enter The Ninja’, passed away on Sunday, one day after celebrating his 26th birthday. Botha was diagnosed at an early age with progeria, which lowers life expectancy drastically. Despite this,he lived a longer and fuller life than most thought possible.

I know this isn’t the worst thing to happen to French civil liberties by a long shot, but still; the interpretation of a law prohibiting ‘commercial advertising’ – which, in effect, will mean that newsreaders may no longer mention Facebook or Twitter, unless the story is about Facebook or Twitter – makes total social media sense. Total.
