Taxi Rank is a newly-launched web app that lets folks in Cape Town order cabs online or via smartphones – which isn’t in itself especially new or useful. What is pretty neat is that, once pick-up and drop-off points are specified, the service also provides estimated quotes by Cape Town’s various taxi companies, organized by price.
Rebekah Brooks, the former News International chief, and News of the World editor, is enjoying a sabbatical in Cape Town. Cutting a notably different appearance from the fiery redhead we’re used to, the media mogul has been escaping the phone hacking and corruption scandal that’s followed her around for months.
South Africa’s Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has reported that approximately 39 people were killed on South Africa’s roads between December 1 – 31, 2011, and it’s not over yet as the holiday season draws to a close this week.
I didn’t know what to expect, to be honest. I spend quite a bit of time at the Planet Bar (Thursday nights a must), which is sophisticated and cool, with a relaxed vibe. It certainly is more ‘mod’ when compared to, say, the world-famous Mount Nelson tea room – just next door. So when it came to […]
When you think of an airport you’re likely to conjure up images of wide open spaces, cordoned off for kilometres, free of any midair obstacles, and normally you’d be right on the money. However, perched between two 6km mountains, Paro Airport in Bhutan is anything but normal.
This is not a paid-for feature. I just saw an announcement on the Emirates website about this global sale they’ve having, and I thought you would like to know about it – given your propensity for travel and good deals! Looks like a pretty impressive line-up of rates they’ve got here. I even did a test […]
At the moment, Samoa is the last country to see the sun go down every day, but a change in the international dateline will now make it the first to see the sun rise. Samoa is getting ready to skip a day and shift its time zone forward by 24 hours.
Following hot on the heels of South African tourist Nobanda Nolubabalo’s dreadlock cocaine bust in Thailand, reports today reveal that at least three other SA citizens have been busted for drug trafficking in the last week. So if you’re travelling internationally this holiday, don’t drop dead with surprise if you’re searched at customs, particularly if you’re a young female.
This just happened at Cape Town International Airport. For the older folk, that’s “DF Malan Airport.” We are not sure how this happened but assume it has something to do with the driver wanting to avoid the airport parking scam. Follow the link to enlarge the photograph.
I cruised into Johannesburg with The Muse last weekend, to attend the AXE Excite Cloud 9 party, held at The Venue in Melrose Arch. I could be forgiven for thinking I had woken up inside an eagles nest of sorts, due to the abundance of white feathers from the wings worn by the angels. And […]
Seriously – you don’t have to be a genius to work out how radical this deal is. There are a lot of Groupon deals out there and we choose the ones that we think will suit the 2oceansvibers out there. Like that one the other day which got you backstage at Kings Of Leon – […]
It’s been a while since we hung out at the Planet Bar. And when I say “hung out” I mean arriving there at lunch time and leaving at midnight. Because that’s what we used to do. Then time got lost and some years went by, and now I see Cape Town’s coolest lounge/champagne bar is […]
In September, the science world was left in shock when workers at the world’s largest physics lab announced they had recorded subatomic particles travelling faster than the speed of light. Now, measurements by an opposing team of physicists suggest neutrinos cannot have travelled faster than the speed of light.
A brand-new, fully electric superbus has been purchased to make traveling between Dubai and Abu-Dhabi more enjoyable. It is designed to be capable of driving 250 km/hr whilst carrying 23 passengers! I believe the term “amazeballs” is appropriate here. Pics and a video of this delicious monstrosity after the jump.
Commercial space travel is now literally months away, and it appears that a mission to Mars is not too far off either. Six men that have been locked in large steel piped tubes for 520 days emerged from isolation earlier today after a bid to simulate a mission to Mars. This is taking Survivor to the next level.
Howz this vibe, a plane landed perfectly without wheels in Poland! It took off from New York. The drought is over. Mark this day down in your calender, kids. 12 October 2011 is the date you’ll always remember, for making domestic air travel in South Africa that much less excrutiating. Air travel, meet online content streaming. Online content streaming, meet air travel.
If the thought of waiting until the 2015 Rugby World Cup to visit Japan is less appealing right now, consider going there sooner, and for free, courtesy of the country’s tourism agency. The Japan Tourism Agency has announced it will fund airfares for 10 000 foreign travelers in an attempt to help the country’s plummeting tourism levels recover in the face of nuclear disaster.
India’s most famous tourist attraction, the 358-year-old Taj Mahal, will collapse within five years unless something drastic is done. The wooden foundation is becoming brittle and disintegrating due to a lack of water. This is because the river crucial to its survival is being blighted by pollution, industry and deforestation.
Did you actually stop and focus on this ad in the Sunday Times for Emirates airlines? That is a fine airplane cabin right there, ladies and gents. How’s our boy there? Just quietly enjoying it. And so he should – he’s bloody earned it! God bless him. And God bless Emirates. And that is where you […]
The occasional airport comes kitted with sleeping lounges, but not everyone can get into those lounges. So, that’s what Sleepbox is for. Sleepbox is a temporary bedroom for the average traveler, that can be rented for periods of time while you’re tired and hanging around at the airport.
I’m not clear on why we would still need travel agents or anything, but if we do, Google Flights, launching today, is up to the task. Initially only available in a couple of US cities, Google Flights is the first result we’ve seen of Google’s acquisition of travel software company ITA back in April.
It ‘s going to be creativity and persistence that will get the world through the current financial crises it’s enduring. Our Dear Leader, KimJong-il, has finally come to the party too and ventured into the tourism business: North Korea’s first cruise ship is here. It’s old and a bit of a joke, but a start none-the-less.
Just how big will the biggest airport in the world be? Daxing airport is expected to handle 120 to 200 million passengers a year. That’s about three times the capacity of Heathrow’s current annual passenger flow. It will occupy a total of 54 square kilometers and boast nine runways. That’s almost Mark Wahlberg size!
Previously known as the breakthrough company for holiday reviews, TripAdvisor has come under attack for false reviews quite a bit recently, and been sued quite a bit too. Now the British advertising watchdog, the Advertising Standards Authority, has launched a formal investigation into the hugely popular travel review website because the company is probably in breach of the advertising code.
Thursday, 1st September is not to be missed! Unless you don’t enjoy the words ‘fine wine’, ‘gourmet cuisine’ and ‘live jazz’ in the same sentence! We do. That’s why we strongly urge you to book for what is sure to be another raging success at the 1800 Grill Room! They’re nearly sold out so I […]
Google has begun to map parts of the Amazon and Rio Negro Rivers, as well as small areas of northwestern Brazil, in an attempt to capture panoramic images of the remote region and its communities for the world to see. Google enlisted the help of locals and will use camera-equipped tricycles as well as boats to capture the imagery.
Travellers to next month’s Rugby World Cup may be pleased to discover that Air New Zealand has recently launched its ‘cuddle class’ seats. A redesign of the Boeing 777-300 now allows economy class travellers to lie flat for the first time on a long haul flight. A lovely idea, as long as you’re not very tall.
Cathay Pacific have kindly confirmed that the leaked images of an air hostess administering pleasure to a captain, in a Cathay Pacific aircraft, are genuine. But they claim the aircraft was on the ground at the time. Oh, ok – so that means they don’t join the mile high club? This, from tvnz: Airline Cathay […]
