Yesterday Lonesome George, the last of the Pinta Island subspecies of the giant tortoise, died, marking the total extinction of his subspecies. It’s a sad day, as Lonesome George became a symbol of other species on the brink of extinction, and an ambassador for Ecuador’s Galapagos Islands.

Bob Welch, formerly Fleetwood Mac’s guitarist and succesful soft-rock soloist of the 70’s, was found in his Nashville home yesterday, dead of an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was 65. Police reports say that Welch’s body was found by his wife in the mid-afternoon, along with a suicide note.

World Famous Hairstylist Vidal Sassoon Dies

Sassoon came to prominence in the 1960s as he pioneered the “wash and wear” look for women’s hair, basically freeing women from over-stylised, labour-intensive styles that dominated the 1950s. He pioneered an “architectural” approach to hairstyling, using geometric cuts and shapes modeled on the facial structure of the person he was styling. At the time, the approach was revolutionary.
