Cape Town Considering Commercial Uses for Stadium

Trying to avoid the title of White Elephant trainers, the City of Cape Town is considering turning Cape Town Stadium “into a hub of commercial activity”. The idea is to introduce restaurants, night clubs, sports bars and coffee spots to the stadium to make back some of the R44,6 million a year running costs.

The Department of Health has released the results of a study completed earlier this year that paints a grim picture of both Cape Town and the Western Cape’s rampant use and abuse of alcohol. During my time living in Blightly, I cultivated a certain fondness for the ritual around a curry. A group of friends and I would often end the weekend with dinner at the end of the High Street, and it was here that I became well-versed in the merits of the Lamb Rogan Gosh, the pitfalls of the Vindaloo and the careful preparation of the crispy poppadom. Situated adjacent to Greenmarket Square, a mere poppadom frisbee’s throw from Wale Street, Bukhara is an institution in Cape Town and never fails to impress. Last week we decided to reintroduce the sacred London tradition and sat around a table to enjoy a curry whilst rehashing some vintage tales from the underground.

In economic terms, the past two years have been pretty chilly, which has in turn left more than a few businesses owners feeling a little hot under the collar. Controversial Cape Town restaurant, Jardine, is the latest to fall foul of the global recession, and the head chef has made for greener pastures.
