The crew of National Geographic Channel’s hit series Shark Men announced this past Friday that they had broken the previous record for the biggest Great White Shark ever caught and released alive. They exhibited their capture on Sunday night on the US version of the show. We’ll unfortunately have to wait a bit to see it over here in Africa.
Loyal 2oceansvibe readers will be relatively well versed in terms of what it takes to pull off a flesh-revealing stunt in a race. Remember when Evan Price rode the Argus earlier this year in that Borat mankini? Alas, Brett Henderson hasn’t been as lucky. Mind you, he was effectively just long-distance streaking.
A new iPhone game that’s been developed by a company from Boston, and that allows users to drive a truck full of immigrants through the desert while trying to prevent them from getting thrown out of the vehicle, has understandably been rejected by Apple Inc. The bigoted game can still be downloaded for PC’s and Mac’s though.
Finally, the average layperson will be able to write and solve invisible ink messages. And not with those funny highlighters that did the rounds in the 90’s either. The CIA has no doubt allowed us all to become privy to this information because they have no need for invisible ink anymore. Data encryption has progressed somewhat.
The recession is serving up another good deal, friends. For about R5,4 million you can buy the historic village of Valle Piola in Italy. It’s surrounded by wild and mountainous terrain, and is set in the heart of one of the country’s biggest national parks, Gran Sasso.
On Monday NASA announced it was distributing $269 million to four companies for them to develop spacecraft to take astronauts into orbit. The investment is an Obama administration gamble that will enable commercial companies to get people to and from orbit in quicker time and with less cost.
Terrible things happen in Pretoria. Three people were killed when their drag race went horribly wrong on Voortrekker Road on 3 April. But that doesn’t mean that it’s anywhere near the best place to die in a car crash in this country.
Microsoft has decided to have a real dig at the Google group by launching its own 3D mapping system. The unique selling point thus far – they will be taking numerous precautionary measures to ensure that they don’t fall into the data privacy trap like Google did.
The use of the FourSquare application has been popular to say the least. You know, you sign yourself in at a particular place in a brave attempt to make others jealous of where you currently are, it shows up in your various newsfeeds and boom, you are instantly cool. Now there’s FearSquare.
The date has finally been announced and it’s more imminent that you might think. May 1st will be the day Richard Branson will honour the bet made back at the beginning of the 2010 Formula One season. Branson and Tony Fernandes, of Team Lotus, had wagered over whose Formula One team would place higher at the Bahrain Formula One race.
Golfers at Carbrook Golf Club in Queensland in Australia can certainly boast testing themselves against one of the sport’s scariest water hazards ever – a lake of Zambezi or Bull sharks. The “hazards” have apparently been around for some time but thankfully we now have a video for proof.
The headline says it all. Students from the Siberian State Aerospace University decided to mark and honour Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin’s first flight into space, which was 50 years ago today, by building a rocket out of a guitar. Coincidentally it resembles a Gibson Flying V.
Engineers have used a flying drone to peer into the damaged reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant on Sunday. The drone has been used by the US military and reportedly weighs about 23kg and has the propensity to withstand winds of up to 20 knots.
Archaeologists have claimed they may well have found the oldest gay in the village. A 5 000 year old burial site and human remains are causing the stir and it’s got to do with the way the skeletal remains have been buried.
It’s safe to say that tests are still in their early stages but it’s also safe to say that scientists are quite a bit closer to helping people overcome their fear of heights. They have discovered that by giving people a tablet of the stress hormone cortisol, they can help reduce their phobia.
It seems this is a common problem that the US Naval Academy faces. Another midshipman was expelled from the force for using or having a banned weed-like substance known as “spice”. No spice. This brings the total number of expulsions to 12.
A report in The Star newspaper has revealed how a Teacher has had to resign because he was caught puffing on the old knowledge cabbage with a pupil. It’s no big secret that South African schools have had problems with drug use over the years, but this is an upper class school, so it was probably good stuff.
South Africa’s only ski resort is due to go under the hammer in May. The resort was embroiled in a long and shady financial scandal that began in 2007 and was eventually forced to close the slopes indefinitely in 2009. But now you can own it!
The Tanzanian “miracle” pastor, Reverend Ambilikile “Babu” Mwasapile has called for a break. He has temporarily asked people to stop going to his remote home for a “miracle cure” after thousands flocked there, resulting in chaos in the surrounding area.
There were even rumours of a planned party in Cape Town at one stage, but it appears nothing more than a low key gig went down for Wills this weekend. It has emerged that his stag do took place at home on Mud Island too, reportedly on a friend’s estate in Norfolk.
Borre Erstad and Paul Age Olsen from Bergen in Norway waited patiently for the search engine’s car after receiving a tip off that the drivers were in the area. This is the sort of stunt that you can only dream of pulling off, but, these guys actually did it. Awesome ambushing footage after the jump.
This will probably rate right up there with their worst ever experiences together as grandfather and grandson. It certainly wasn’t one of those happy days like you’d see on adverts or in the movies. Although, mind you, I suppose it did start out as an innocent canoe trip which was probably fun for a while.
Unfortunately yes, you did read that correctly. Sam, a somewhat timid and reserved 19 year old, is standing up for what he feels is right. He has decided enough is enough and it’s time that he joined the rebel forces on the front line in the Libyan Desert.
Described as a holy grail for South African historians, the gun Nelson Mandela buried almost 50 years ago is nowhere near being reunited with its original proprietor. The owner of the property where the gun is supposedly buried, originally part of Liliesleaf farm, is at loggerheads with museum officials representing the Liliesleaf Trust.
This has Blood Diamond 2 written all over it. In fact I’m going to tweet DiCaprio about this just as soon as I finish writing this piece. Don’t you want to hear more of Danny Archer’s bru’s and boets too? Either way, this is a big diamond we are talking about.
And that’s because scientists have proven, with a rather deceitful method, that you were merely mistaken all along and that there’s no possible way you could actually have had an out-of-body experience. Why? Because your senses were just confused and they tricked you into believing it happened.
An old man has virtually done the impossible and survived a five day ordeal in the Arizona Desert near a little spot they call Cave Creek, which is rather ironic. Hank Morello managed to do this by eating his left-over pasta and drinking his windscreen wiper water. Did I mention he also has mild dementia and diabetes?
Somehow, Steven Krumholz of West Hollywood managed to sneak a large amount of drugs aboard the MS Allure of the Seas (that’s not a joke name) for what was billed as the world’s largest gay cruise. Authorities discovered his on-board party shop a little too late, though.
Weed, porn and political activism are just a few of the rumblings materialising from the infamous Chilean mining accident. Information sharing was tightly controlled by Chilean authorities for the duration of the saga, but New York Times journalist Jonathan Franklin was one of the privileged few considered to be on a need to know basis. He’s written a book on the matter.
Just when our Australian friends thought that it was safe enough to come out and begin picking up their lives again, another potential deadly threat is poised to strike. This time it’s an aggressive avian, the Cassowary, which may take to wandering urban streets after being displaced by floodwaters.
