WELSH RARE-BOB 9
7 May 2004

Hi Team!

I know I've been quiet but there's been all sorts going on....

Well, the Welsh season is drawing to a close and the league title is stiill up for grabs, very exciting with just the last two rounds to go... We are in contention and are a good example of the underdogs coming good. It's a good feeling! We were written off at the beginning of the season as being a fringe team and we have turned a few of the big names over. Our destiny now lies in our hands and I reckon with a little bit of lady luck we could carry the cup until next season.... so hold thumbs ...!

I have had quite a bit on my plate over the last couple of months what with the links to an exciting new start up team. There have been leaks to the various forms of media about my involvement ... so let me just say this...... If it goes ahead I will be involved and so will Sean Fitzpatrick and it will be a positive addition to world rugby. With the passion and commitment of some of the most effective investors in sport, this venture, when it flies, will rock world rugby and help it become the truly global game that it is destined to be!

As far as home goes I've been doing a bit of commentating for Sky TV and the Super 12 teams seem to have left it to the last minute again! It's very close and I hope they pull off the extraordinary results they need to both make it through. Finger scrossed and nails bitten right off !

The off season this side sees a few of the teams shuffling around, with some South Africans benefiting from the relegation of Rotherham, and some not ... The Worcester team that has gone up into the Premiership has to be ready for a tough season if the results enjoyed (not) by Rotherham are anything to go by. Also, Jaco vd Westhuyzen is off to Japan , with a possible stop in SA. His form has been sublime and the Leicester Tigers are going to miss him. Another awesome Heineken (rugby's version of the UEFA Champions League) cup is at the end with the London based Wasps playing against Toulouse, it should be an absolute cracker 'cos they are far and away the most deserving finalists. (ex SA Stuart Abbott still cleaning up - Editor). It truly is great tournament and the fact that the Dragons have qualified for next years lineup has already boosted interest in the regional system of rugby.

In terms of home I am hoping to get back for a wedding or two, but I need to get a good off season training session under the belt. I don't want it hanging over the belt like after Christmas. So if I don't see too much of home it will be in favour of being fit and raring to go for the next challenge!

All the best and keep those voices primed for what is sure to be a cracking home series of tests and a thunderous tri-nations

My very best,

Bob

23 April 2004

Maybe it is the lucky stars, ........I really don't know, but what I do know is one thing, I am incredibly fortunate to be a professional sportsman! Due to the over load of matches that are running through three different competitions this side, and the Super Twelve that side, we have been playing on a week on, week off basis. Not the entire week obviously, but the weekend at least. And if we are very lucky, sometimes a day before or after .... It is this fortunate situation that allowed me to get to Switzerland over the Easter weekend! We were able to relax on and off the slopes with varsity friends Nick Goldblatt and Jamie Boyes. It was a weekend excursion put together by Tricky Tickie Bruyns and George Skaris from the Absolute Ski Lodge in Verbier ... What a cracker! I have put some photos in as well so you get an idea. If you haven't been yet, get with the program! These guys are slick, organised and even though it was the end of the season, great fun to be around ..

I didn't brave the slopes in/on actual ski gear due to insuring a couple of potentially expensive bones, but had agreat time on the ski-bob bikes! Also spent some quality time in the Pension and even managed a braai in the snow! The night life in Verbier has to be seen to be believed ! Debbie hasn't been before and snuck in two days of lessons. So she at least got a head start on the slopes and has been shown the basics without the rush and hassle of being in a huge group. I hope to be back there or at least skiing somewhere when I don't have my rugby career to worry about! Thanks guys for the time and effort, we had a ball!

Yes, thats it, thats the one, now youve got it (private joke)

Here are some of the pics...

From good to even better, after a great weeks training we took on the Cardiff Blues at our home ground and turned the tables on a star studded opposition! After struggling to cross the line we ended very strongly and put on a five try drubbing which was well appreciated by a very vocal home crowd! The European Cup (Heineken) has only enough room for four Welsh sides and the beauty of the win was that we have definitely qualified now and it is almost a write off for Cardiff. They're almost certainly in the Parker Pen cup for the fifth placed Welsh side and no chance of catching us on the log.

Even though I have just arrived I could feel the rivalry building up through the week and was happy to be part of a committed and efficient win. Our coach, Mike Ruddock, is the newly appointed Welsh coach and I think the game was a nice one for him. It has been said that the Welsh team needs a bit of a shake up and it was good to see the Newport boys put their hands up for the places on the summer tour ...

I've been a little under the weather, I don't think a full blown flu but certainly have been off my game for two or three days and only back to training tomorrow.

I told you I was lucky.... I've also have been given two tickets to the Charlton Athletic vs Fulham match this weekend, so will be off to watch one of the SA boys bury the winner in the quest for a Champions League place ! (many thanks to Dr Wayne Diesel, their SA Physio )

Enjoy the weekend and celebrate hard on freedom day

Bob

WELSH RARE-BOB 7 (PART 2 of 2)
10 April 2004

(cntd. from part 1 below) ...with the crowd chanting 'we want more', as they were being ushered out by the bouncers at the eleven pm curfew...!

The band were in good spirits and, after they had sat for a few autographs and photos, I had a drink with them too! Outstanding PR and a good example of hungry musos with real talent who don't mind rolling their sleeves up and doing the work. I couldn't help but feel very proud for, and of, them and I wish them all the success in such a difficult, and competitive industry!

The definite upside of being on the muddy island is the proximity to the European mainland and the low cost of travel. It really is an absolute bonus. Debs and I are booked to Geneva this weekend and from there on to Verbier! Beautiful!

We can't wait to see friends who are working there and upon my return I will be reporting as to whats hot and whats not in Switzerland! We're missing home around Easter time, but hopefully a little holiday trip will make up for it !

I have had comms with Corne and Dixie , and see the Stormers have headed off to the Aus/Nz leg of the Super 12. They are in definite contention for the semis. I just think they need to pick up a few points on tour - probably aim for two out of the four wins.... and a few more in bonus points. Very achievable. I hope they do because it would be a nice start to John Smit's tenure if the team have a bit of confidence on the back of the Super 12. It makes a big difference to have a national team with a culture of winning games away from home.

Ok, thats me! Enjoy the long weekend and tell Mr Jake White that, after being in amongst them, I am very keen to play against the Welsh boys in the summer!

Nje

WELSH RARE-BOB 7 (PART 1 of 2)
8 April 2004

Time flies when you are having fun....

I know, I know - very slack. I didn't mean to throw a ninja bomb. I wasn't slack really, its just that I had a quiet week last week. I decided I didn't want to bore any readers with the usual routine drivel. I think we've all but mapped the town out in the last couple of columns! So I decided to leave it to the wit and humour of your beloved editor, Seth Rotherham... But now I return with a whole new angle. Rugby has been good and off the field I've had a good time too.

I am in a very good place rugby wise. We had an awesome away win over the Edinburgh Gunners and are back in the race for the top of the league! Aaah... the fire breathing Dragons! In fact, only the Ulster and the star studded Llanelli team are in it with us... They have to play each other as well which is good because a draw or a loss for either of them is a big point swing for us. .... so hold thumbs!

Andy Marinos was at home in the bush at his sister Helen's wedding so we didn't have our usual starting centre. But he is back and fired up for our Welsh Derby next week against the Cardiff blues!

I wasn't in the hills of Tibet as Seth mentioned on the site, but I have had a lot of time to think about a global season and the structure it would have to enjoy. I think the weather turning has had something to do with it, but the season to play here is definitely summer. I know I am a bit warmer, but it is so plain and obvious that the weather is a huge factor for fans that come to live games. The interest is not big enough to have every game on TV so there are a lot of fans who come and watch at sub zero temperatures on a Friday night - not ideal for a comeback audience!

If these matches could be played through the summer thay would be all day affairs, and the experience could be so much more enjoyable than what they have on offer at the moment...

I had a day off today which couldn't have been timed any better! I went through to london last night for a real treat - Just Jinger were playing at the Walkabout Pub in Shepherds bush! What a night - and they were brilliant! The place was jam packed full of 'saffers' and music lovers in general. They brought the house down...with the crowd chanting 'we want more' as they ................ end of part 1

(very childish, we know. Part two will be online by Friday evening - Editor)
