Two recent medical studies claim that antiretroviral medications could help protect healthy people from contracting the HIV virus through sexual contact. How? Just drink an antiretroviral daily! The findings claim that this could greatly cut a person’s infection risk by as much as 73%. If this is true, then humanity could be looking at a potential game-changer in the fight against AIDS.
Lucky New Yorkers witnessed an amazing solar phenomenon where the suns sets in alignment with the city’s skyscrapers. The effect is similar to that seen in England at Stonehenge. Welcome all to Manhattanhenge.
If you haven’t been living under a rock the past few months than chances are maybe you’ve been planking on one. Anyone who has had the privilege of being at a Foo Fighters concert, actually, anyone who knows their music, will know the energy that this band has. Especially frontman Dave Grohl. On Monday night they performed at the iTunes Festival in London. Some fans had a fight and Dave was not impressed. At all. NSFW by the way.
Just Jinjer front man and close friend of 2oceansVibe, Ard Matthews, has embarked on a one month, two-man roadtrip with his dog, Jeff, from Cape Town to Durban, where he’ll reside in the comfort of a temperate climate, decent curry and warm, surfable waves, for at least six months. True winners like Eden Wood always quit at the top of their game – on their own terms. At the age of six she is currently on an epic winning streak and has over 300 child beauty pageant titles behind her name. But this week she announced, along with her manager/mom, that she is retiring from the industry. Next? A memoir named “From Cradle to Crown”.
During my time living in Blightly, I cultivated a certain fondness for the ritual around a curry. A group of friends and I would often end the weekend with dinner at the end of the High Street, and it was here that I became well-versed in the merits of the Lamb Rogan Gosh, the pitfalls of the Vindaloo and the careful preparation of the crispy poppadom. Situated adjacent to Greenmarket Square, a mere poppadom frisbee’s throw from Wale Street, Bukhara is an institution in Cape Town and never fails to impress. Last week we decided to reintroduce the sacred London tradition and sat around a table to enjoy a curry whilst rehashing some vintage tales from the underground.
In a landmark decision, Austria has granted “pastafarian”, Niko Alm, the right to wear a pasta strainer on his head for his driver’s license photo.
At dinner the other night I was paging through a rather limpid looking wine list. Safe wines, boring wines; not one of which inspired in me even a trace of “Wahoo!” I saw one from a producer I have enjoyed before – a Shiraz that I thought may offer something of interest. Boy, was I wrong. It was as interesting as watching paint dry on a black and white television, showing curling. The reason for it’s complete drabness was that it had fallen into the trap that many South African reds are succumbing to. The wine maker was forcing the wine to strongly exhibit flavours and aromas of coffee and chocolate.
Gonorrhea, one of the most commonly treated STDs, is becoming more and more resistant to the only drug left to treat it. US scientists are warning that it could be the next super-bug.
Next time you’re on the beach (and frankly, given the current weather in Cape Town, that may be later today), bear in mind that there’s more to the scenery than meets the eye. Sand is ba-yoodiful, too – beyond what our human eyes can perceive. Have a look at these shots of tiny grains of sand magnified to 250 times their real size.
According to the Syrian Arab News Agency, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Monday “swore” in Anas Abdul- Razzaq Na’em as the new governor of Hama. Later, al-Assad received Na’em and instructed him with his directives, wishing him success in his duties. But was he really there?

The real Cell C CEO, Lars Reichelt, will be leaving the company with immediate effect according to the company’s board. Reichelt joined Cell C two-and-a-half years ago and has since commuted extensively between South Africa and Switzerland, where his family lives. Do you remember Adriaan Bergh? Of course you do. He blessed us with the most incredible viral video to ever emanate from South Africa. Of course, he was merely a Mr South Africa contestent when that was made. Now days, he likes to go by the name of Mr South Africa, 2011. Which, of course, he is. And now, after being robbed, he’s a very angry Mr South Africa.
A UK man was one of six drug smugglers caught yesterday at OR Tambo International. The creative fellow was wearing a handsome bra and panties stuffed full of cocaine.
Tired of being jobless, Mork Encino decided it was time to start his own business – allowing people to hunt him for sport. Well, you know what they say in America: ‘aint no better measurement of an economy than when your daddy sells himself as live game’. Feel free to quote me on that.

Cape Town motorists have begun filling-up their petrol tanks fearing a petrol shortage later this week. The main march takes place in Cape Town next week.
Last week, an American firefighter, Shannon Stone, attempted a crowd baseball catch, lost his footing and fell 6m. He later died from his injuries. On the very same day of his funeral another fan fell at a game in exactly the same way. But this story had a better ending as he was caught by fellow spectators just in time, and survived.
As The Rugby World Cup draws near, an important part of the psychological preparation of any team is knowing that their nation is behind them. And what could be an easier way of showing your love and support in this age of pressurised, desk-bound work than with the combined tools of the the interwebs, and […]
In 1951, Sean Connery, at age 21, posed for an art class at the Edinburgh College of Art. There, a student, Robert Webster painted him wearing only a g-string and coyly looking over his left shoulder. Sexy art but still art nonetheless! Webster, being a real bro however, never showed these to pieces the public. But he passed away last month and his family feels differently about the situation.
Here’s a fun video on gun safety, by Derek “Tex” Grebner, who describes himself on his YouTube channel as “a pretty unprofessional outdoors show host and an unbiased online gear reviewer”. In the video, Tex shows us how not to draw your Kimber Pro Carry II .45 ACP from its holster, by shooting himself in the leg.
“Ti amiamo, Armani” means (roughly): “We love you Armani, and your timeless style – and we need you to design our tracksuits for London 2012”. That’s what Italy’s Olympic Committee has arranged for the Azzurri for the Summer Olympics next year.
Flower selling in Adderley Street, Cape Town, is tradition in one of its purest forms. For some 100 years, man has always known he merely has to make a short drive into town, come rain or shine, to demonstrate old fashioned chivalry. Unfortunately, it appears an unused prawn lane is now hurting business, say the sellers.
A journalist had the audacity to call Floyd Shivambu right out of the blue to ask his opinion on reports that Julius Malema had spent roughly R78 000 on a holiday. Shockingly, Floyd answered his phone. Also, he swore at the journalist. Listen to an audio clip of the conversation inside.
Paul Allen, founder of Ancestry.com, not to be confused with the co-founder of Microsoft, has said on his Google+ page that the new social network may surpass ten million users within the next 24 hours. Zounds!
Many moons ago, Jan Braai set off on an incredible 40-day, cross country adventure. The mission was to criss-cross South Africa, visiting at least one National Heritage Site per day. And by “visiting” we of course mean “braaing at”. The entire adventure was documented for dsTV’s KykNet channel, and has been packaged into a great […]
Taking the Bear Grylls survival lifestyle to the next level, a crew member of the final space shuttle mission aboard space shuttle Atlantis, which departed on Friday, will reportedly be testing out a new system designed to turn urine into a sugary-flavoured sports drink.
