UCT vs. Durbanville-Bellville
Varsity
1stXV captain Richard Neville, stared into the bottom of
glass on Saturday night dreaming of what could have been. It was
1am and he could have followed the masses down to Billy's hours
earlier but at R10 a double zane and coke at the UCT Pub, there
was only ever going to be one winner!
Wearing
scars and stiches to his face that would make Brendan Cannon wish
he played the Boks every day Richard is relishing a return this
week to Groote Schuur, the spiritual home of Rugby Union (and the
bum-funnel). Coming off an eight week holiday the students have
had to negotiate two very difficult fixtures on the road. They went
down narrowly to both Tygerberg and Collegians. Varsity have played
good rugby at times but a lack of consistency on their part and
also at crucial moments by the referees have left them with very
little to show for a hell of a lot of effort!
Come
Saturday Neville and his loyal disciples will be looking to get
their season back on track when the face the more predictable Durbanville-Bellville.
Varsity beat Durbell, as they are affectionately known to their
supporters, in the first round of fixtures and will be looking to
once again run them off their feet. Durbell are known for the forward
strength and over the years have developed the most feared driving
maul in the league. Varsity on the other hand like to score tries
via their wings and will use the human steam-train Animal Roberts
to get them over the gain line before unleashing their lethal backs.
Under the steely-eye of Lenny "Kravitz" Kaplan the Varsity
backs have flourished and centre Rory Mathews in particular
is in top form. His pin-point passes have allowed fullback Anthony
Knox to regularly waltz into the line before putting away WP
Currie Cup-capped winger Johnny Bradshaw.
Of
course though we all know rugby matches are won up front and the
Ikeys tight-five will have to front-up to the considerable challenge
posed by the boys from beyond the boerewors-curtain. Tighthead Snoopie
Knoop in particular looks very fired up.
(See
picture HERE
for more). Snoopie, ably assisted by his wing-man (and part-time
boyfriend) Doug "Skeg" Bryant and Bodo "The Door" Sieber
will be looking to provide a soild platform from which the hugely
talented looseforward David Ricketts and skipper Ricky
Nev can attack.
Player
to watch: Anthony Roberts was capped at wing by Zimbabwe
in the 1990's, he was at his best for UCT back in 1997 but if he
can be kept out of Forries on Friday night he is still has a huge
influence on the Varisty side. The more he can get his hands on
the ball and produce his trademark bollocking runs the more space
the Varsity backs will have to weave their magic!
