Seth Rotherham is founder and CEO of 2oceansvibe. Born and bred in Cape Town (also lived for three years in London during the late 90s IT boom), he created South Africa’s first commercial blog platform and the country’s first commercial online radio station. On the studies side, Seth holds a degree in marketing, studied entrepreneurship at Harvard Business School and has obtained a private pilot’s license.
Seth is passionate about marketing, business and entrepreneurship. Other endeavours that fall within ‘The Vibe,’ include 2oceansvibe’s retail offering – Cafe du Cap in Newlands Village, Cape Town, Malawi Cane – a wholesale furniture export business and Cabine du Cap, a luxury mountain retreat just outside of Cape Town.
Seth was made GQ’s best dressed man in 2010, proving fashion does have a sense of humour. He also wrote a book entitled, ‘Work is a sideline, live the holiday‘ – a guide to testing and creating online businesses. check out sethrotherham.co.za for more.
2OCEANSVIBE INTRO
2oceansvibe was born in 2002, before people were using the word ‘blog.’ Seth Rotherham created the platform (pure HTML) to share photographs of his adventures – often featuring Cape Town nightlife and general good times. The first few readers were just Seth’s friends – then came friends of friends. The concept of blogging really kicked off globally a few years later. The SA Blog Awards were created and, because of the established audience, 2oceansvibe would win awards every year. Mainstream picked up on it, given further exposure to 2oceansvibe and Seth Rotherham.
Since then the platform has morphed into the biggest solely-owned online news platform in South Africa. We have a team of writers and publish up to 30 stories a day. Our audience enjoys the mix of business, tech, entertainment, politics and hot viral content. We offer filtered news – stuff that people really talk about – with the rest of the noise filtered out. Because you don’t have time for that.
2oceansvibe gets up to a million readers a month, depending on the time of year and news cycle.
ONLINE TRENDS
Whilst 2oceansvibe has excellent clickthrough rates and editorial / advertorial page views, we are very in touch with our community behavior patterns. That said, we know that people like you and I don’t necessarily buy something the minute we read about it or see it featured on a banner. But we do talk to each other and give recommendations based on things we’ve heard or read about.
This is where 2oceansvibe excels and why brands like Vespa, MINI, Puma, Sunglass Hut, Butler’s Pizza, Mount Nelson and Digicape have partnered with us for so many years.
WHERE IT’S GOING
It is becoming widely evident that the gap between publisher and agency is narrowing. With our deep understanding of this audience, combined with 2oceansvibe’s extensive editorial and marketing skills, we are perfectly placed to consult and advise on marketing campaigns – and then to roll them out on our platform.
THE BIG DIFFERENCE
We believe in allowing our readers long-term (six or 12 months), sustained exposure to brands that we believe in. Whist our “Slow Roast Marketing” angle is gaining huge momentum as a “must have” method for 2017, the BIG thing that sets 2oceansvibe apart from other publications, is that we offer exclusivity in a category.
That said, we are quite particular about who gets long-term access to this community, and as a result we often turn down companies for partnerships. It is important that we only expose brands that understand quality and good service.
MERGING ONLINE AND OFFLINE – THE NEXT FRONTIER
As a publisher / agency with a lifestyle twist, 2oceansvibe has managed to merge the digital world with the real world. Our retail and accommodation properties allow our exclusive alignments with premium brands to carry over from 2oceansvibe.com to something you can see and touch. Check out our restaurant, Café du Cap in Cape Town’s CBD, our luxury cabin in the mountains, Cabine du Cap, and our apartments in Cape Town’s city bowl.
Needless to say Rupert Wines, our official wine partner, is served at all of these fine establishments. Online and offline – that’s where you need to be.
Welcome to 2oceansvibe – please enjoy your stay.
