Have you heard about the go! Travel South Africa App for iPad? It’s mind blowing.
Over the course of the last weekend I noticed one thing – the stunning weather. And it can only get better given the fact that winter is ending soon. Soonish, at least. I mean, surely. Those of you who follow 2oceansvibe on Twitter may have even noticed I did something I often like to do – show you the sunset from The Safe House.
Soon after that I found myself wolfing down a Rotherham, and pondering with La Muse, “Where can we go next weekend if this weather does this again?”
Not waiting for an answer, I went straight to the iTunes store to see what the fuss was all about. I was greeted by this:
We’ve done all the hard work for you and mapped 25 000+ points of interest, including landmarks, nature reserves, restaurants, accommodation options ranging from campsites to hotels, great drives, hiking trails, wine estates, tourist information, shops, services… even adventure activities.
I downloaded the Google-map-based app on my iPad immediately. And then I did something that I usually reserve for those nearest and dearest to me: I smiled.
After pouring over the thousands (okay, dozens – I’m easily convinced) of pre-planned trips and the exquisite photographs from go! magazine’s award-winning photojournalists that cover all of South Africa’s nine provinces, I decided to plan a trip.
Despite the fact that I was eating pizza, the weather had me thinking about seafood, and that was that – the Discover the West Coast pre-planned trip caught my eye.
I couldn’t believe all the options that came my way. I wasn’t keen to drive too far, but I wanted to be out of Cape Town, and I definitely wanted seafood, with a stop or two on the way.
So this is what The Muse and I will be doing: a stop at Evita se Perron in Darling for something boerekos like a koeksister to get the appetite up, and then, we’ll make our way to Die Strandloper for a seafood buffet, which I’ll book for in advance.
Evita se Perron looks like a superb vibe…
Nothing wrong with a seafood buffet…
There is literally so much to do within the short distance we’ll be covering that we could spend weeks up there. It’s a joke.
The app even allows you to book accommodation, tickets for events like the Kirstenbosch Concerts, adventure activities, and a table at your favourite restaurant! Just wow. Life changing.
Some of the other highlights included in the app you should be aware of:
Those offline maps are something else because somewhere such as the Kruger National Park purposefully limits its network coverage within the Park itself, and getting lost wouldn’t be ideal.
It’s fair to say that I wholeheartedly agree with this statement about the go! Travel app – “Ditch the folding map, the handheld GPS, the tourist brochures, the personal tour guide… all you need is go! South Africa.”
Did I mention the app is a free download in the iTunes Store? Well, you know what to do.
