Thys Burger, a former springbok rugby player, has been caught out with his hands dirty after it was unveiled that he has been scamming charities out of money. Burger, who was capped at Number 8 three times in the 80’s, is also the father of former Cheetah players and current Blitzbokke player, Philip Burger.

His modus operandi was simple, auction off some springbok memorabilia at a fundraiser, using his green and gold blazer to bring a bit of prestige to the event. The money raised was then to be given to the charity. Except that last part didn’t happen.

Burger has admitted that he has not paid any of the monies over, stating that he fell on tough times, and could thus not meet his commitments. According to the Muldersdrift Business Women’s Association, for who he raised R35 000, he became a very difficult man to track down.

Burger’s brother has now stepped in and settled some of his debt, although he says that he still has some debt outstanding.
