That’s right folks, just when you thought you the social networking market was saturated, Lady Gaga goes launches her own one, forcing you plunge once more into the pool of superficial social integration. However LittleMonsters.com, which is a little bit Facebook and little bit Pinterest with a dash of Reddit, claims to be more than just another glorified sharing app. Click for the full breakdown.
The new online offering is aimed primarily at “Little Monsters”, fans of the pop sensation, and is a place where they can interact, share Gaga-related content and scrutinize and rate each other’s posts. The site was created by a startup, Backplane, founded by Gaga’s manager, Troy Carter, along with Backplane CEO Matt Michelsen, former Google designer Joey Primiani and former Palantir director of operations Alex Moore.
Despite what it might look like, and what you may think, LittleMonsters is not trying to cannibalise Facebook, but rather to run alongside it.
“We love Facebook — it’s a very powerful tool,” said Michelsen. “This is not a product meant to destroy or compete with Facebook. It’s a different purpose.”
What is this purpose? Building identities around “interests, affinities and movements.” One way it’s hoping to achieve this, is through it’s multilingual chat feature which will allow users from across the globe to interact regardless of their native tongue.
“We wanted to create an experience where language barriers were no longer barriers and where Gaga can communicate with fans in different countries and languages,” Michelsen says.
The site focuses on “what’s hot on the web right now: sharing visuals and rating content.” Although it may seem insignificant, removing the language barriers is a huge step. They’re cutting out the middle man, online translating tools, and allowing real-time interaction between users from anywhere in the world.
LittleMonsters is only the beginning for Backplane which hopes to increase their social presence and build networks for a host of new clients including “Nike, Major League Baseball Player Association and reality TV producer Simon Fuller, among others.”
