This weekend, as part the ceremony of exchange of the national flag in Brasíla, Brazil’s capital, two Mirage 2000 jets performed a very low altitude flyover. So low in fact that their supersonic boom shattered almost all of the windows of the Supreme Court and Congressional buildings! Click through for the awesome video.
Missed that? Keep an eye on the bottom right corner of the video clip as the first fighter tears past, and boom goes the dynamite! The defenceless building which suffered the brunt of the unintentional sonic attack is the work of famed Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer. The damage was caused by the jets’ sonic boom and, according to reports, several other buildings in the vicinity were also left slightly damaged.
Brig Ar Kanitz Marcelo Damasceno, chief of the Center for Social Communication of the Força Aérea Brasileira, said in a statement that the Brazilian Air Force Command would cover the cost of all repairs and that an investigation has been launched.
