The idea of not mentioning the war was lost on a bunch of Poms in Haworth, a small village near Bradford in West Yorkshire, who were seen wearing Nazi SS costumes as a delegation of German visitors arrived on a visit to their British twin town.

Members of the 30-strong party from Hamm, Germany were shocked, horrified, or perhaps thinking, “typical bloody British” when they found the villagers donning swastikas and other Nazi regalia. Haworth parish councillor Barry Thorne, who was acting as a tour guide for the German visitors from Bradford’s twin town said:

When they first came along the bottom of the street it was like the parting of the seas and people were looking and thinking ‘what are they doing? You have got to think that at the very least, they are idiots. One visitor said to me that, if that had happened in Germany, they would have been arrested straight away.

It turns out the town was having a 1940s festival, and some participants thought wearing a SS uniform would be a good idea, because, you know, the SS was around in the 1940s, so what the hell. Nikki Carroll, one of the 20-strong organising committee for the 1940s festival, said “We very much want to respect the people that we lost in the war and would totally discourage anybody wearing the Nazi uniform and swastikas.” Surely they would have learnt from Prince Harry’s similar error a while back that dressing as a Nazi is never a good idea. Especially when the Germans are visiting.
