Sweden has been handing its Twitter account to a different citizen every week for the past seven months. Which has been great for the most part, with priests and lesbian truck drivers representing the country – except the latest @sweden handler has been catching some flack for trying to figure out “whats the fuzz with jews.”
Sonja, the account handler, describes herself as “Holy mother of two. Grew up side by side with awesome nature. 27 years old. This is exciting.” And she seems to be using the exciting opportunity to find out about Jewish folk, because I guess why not.
Sweden, to their credit, are standing by Sonja, who seems less antisemitic than uninformed about “the fuzz with jews.” Although I mean yes, it gets a little worrying in places. Said Tommy Sollén, Social Media Manager at VisitSweden, “It’s very important for us to let everyone take a unique viewpoint. Every one of our curators is there with a different perspective.”
In this case, @sweden’s perspective is the one where you can’t be sure whether or not somebody is jewish without looking at their penis.
Nice job, social media democracy.
