You remember Jack Parow, right? The local rapper who gave us “Cooler as Ekker,” the afrikaans rap song with hilariously sharp lyrics including, “Ek’s ‘n BIC pen, jy’s ‘n Mont Blanc. Jy loop rond met wit skuim op jou mond rand.”
Ja well let me introduce you some of Jack Parow’s buddies – Die Antwoord. They’re afrikaans, they come across as severely white-trash, they drink a lot, swear a lot and they hang around blogs like Wat Kyk Jy (“Die beste Afrikaanse blog en website in die heelal”). More importantly, they’re making some slick tunes, as they continue their quest to “take over the interwebs.”
Just what we were looking for!
According to their website, Die Antwoord is “a lovable, mongrel-like entity made in Zuid Afrika, the love-child of many diverse cultures, black, white, coloured and alien, all pumped into one wild and crazy journey down the crooked path to enlightenment.”
You get the picture?
The trio is made of the heavily tattooed Ninja (Tudor Jones) who is the “Zef rap-rave master,” the spunky little peroxide blonde rubbish Yo-Landi Vi$$er who is the “fresh, futuristik rich bitch” and the super-sized DJ Hi-Tek, the “beat monster.”
Their production is professional and slick with sound that is fresh, fucking hard, intelligently crafted, terrifyingly alarming and hilarious at the same time. I got the gist of it at the beginning of the song, but I couldn’t stop until the end.
And then I played it again.
And so will you.
Click here to meet the gang and then click play below to see their music video for the tune, “Enter The Ninja.”
WARNING: explicit lyrics.
Then, when you’re done with that, check them performing their song, “Wat Kyk Jy ” for Taxijam. I’d be very careful opening that link if I were you..
