The ANC is outraged at the South African National Editor’s Forum’s reaction to its call to boycott the City Press newspaper, following its publication of Brett Murray’s painting. It has now gone a step further, issuing a statement calling advertisers to no longer advertise in the paper.

SANEF, who called the ANC’s boycott an “abuse of power and intimidation,” is being taken to task by the ruling party who feels that they are being “inconsistent and opportunistic” about the matter.

In their statement, the ANC said:

We will continue to call on all South Africans including all formations of civil society and democrats at large who share our sentiment on this issue to boycott the newspaper, cancel their subscriptions as we have done already and not to advertise in the City Press.

As the ANC we are entitled to vote on this issue with the withdrawal of our buying power.

A little childish, don’t you think? If anything, this whole commotion is going to increase the sales of the newspaper, which is only going to draw more advertisers.
