This will surely go down as the most controversial IPL tournament thus far. South African bowler, Wayne Parnell, was among two IPL cricketers arrested and held for questioning after police in Mumbai busted a rave party in the city. Initially they detained about 100 people, officials said earlier. Police also confiscated 110 grams of cocaine, and ecstasy from the party.
Rahul Sharma and Wayne Parnell, who both represent the Pune Warriors, were released on bail today after being detained on Sunday night on suspicion of consuming banned drugs at the party.
The organiser of the party was also arrested for violating drug laws.
Celebrity children and Bollywood groupies were amongst those that underwent medical tests to confirm whether they had consumed drugs.
Vishwas Nangare Patil, a senior police official, told anxious reporters:
In all, 58 men and 32 women were held. Blood and urine samples of these people are being tested and if they are found positive for drug consumption, an investigation will be started against them.
Last week was all about controversy for the IPL: Australian cricketer, Luke Pomersbach, was charged with molesting a woman and assaulting her fiancé in a hotel in New Delhi, and five other IPL players were suspended following corruption allegations against them.
Bollywood superstar, Shah Rukh Khan, found himself banned last week from entering Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium for five years. This after he was found guilty of being involved in a scuffle with security guards at the ground.
Wayne tweeted the following earlier:
Sharma’s relatives denied any charges, and told the NDTV news channel that he had been attending a “birthday party” at the hotel.
