We’ve had the privilege of interviewing Henry Rollins not once, but twice here at 2oceansvibe in the last week. Both interviews are after the jump.

You’ve quipped on stage with certainty that you’ll be returning to the blue collar working world that you came from. Were you being glib, and if not, why are you convinced of that? – Guys like me have their time onstage and then the use by date comes up and you’re done. Time will tell but you never know. I have been getting to do all this cool stuff for a long time. I always think the tour I am on will be the last one.

As an ambassador of well-travelled, geographically aware Americans, what is South Africa’s standing in the world? – It’s not for me to say. I can say that I like South Africa. Other people I know who have traveled here from other places have had great visits as well. I think for many Americans, they know of Mandela and apartheid and little else. They might not know the great strides forward that SA has made. That’s the part that inspires me very much and keeps me coming back.

Which is the most rewarding devotion for a young man: Literature, or physicality? – I think one can and should pursue both. Balance is a great thing to achieve. I think that devoting yourself to only one, you’re missing out on what is great about the other. I think the gym is a great place to think over the things that you have read and a strong body make reading a better experience. I wouldn’t want one without the other.

What is your most treasured material possession? – A picture I have of some old friends of mine all together. It is perhaps the thing I would grab on the way out of the burning house.

Why has classical music (in broad terms) survived hundreds of years of taste discrimination? – Because the majesty of its genius is unassailable.

Who is taking the 2012 election: Obama or Romney? – I don’t have a crystal ball but I think it will be Mr. Obama.

South Africa has a polygamous president. Are we open-minded, or patriarchal? – Perhaps both. That’s an interesting way to go about domestic bliss. It’s a wonder any affairs of state are tended to at all.

Do you hope to leave a legacy when you pass away in years to come, or is the idea of a legacy, vanity? – I don’t want to leave anything. That is to say, I never think about it. They can burn me up and toss the ashes, taking up space in a graveyard is the ultimate vanity. Not for me.

Can America imagine itself as a non global super-power? – This American can. Some of my fellow Americans, perhaps not so much.

Are we all in this together, or are we all alone? – Both, of course.
