Every year, S.Pellegrino and Acqua Panna release a list of the world’s Top 100 Restaurants. Inclusion in the list is an honour that many restaurants lust after, and in the past we’ve had the privilege in the Western Cape to have several restaurants on the list. This year’s list sees Danish restaurant, Noma, maintain the title for a third year running – but where do our beloved SA restaurants stand?
The list awards the Top 50 restaurants in the world, but also recognises those that made it between 51-100. Two Cape restaurants have made it into this second category.
The Tasting Room at Le Quartier Francais
This year sees only one South African restaurant staying on the list, Margot Janse’s “The Tasting Room” at Le Quartier Francais in Franschhoek. The restaurant has been in the top 50 of the list every year since 2005, but has slipped down 27 places to number 57 this year.
The Test Kitchen
Luke Dale Robert’s restaurant, The Test Kitchen is a new entry to the list. The Old Biscuit Mill eatery opened it’s doors little over a year ago, which makes this achievement quite something, and puts a top 100 restaurant right on the doorstep of Capetonians. The Test Kitchen enters the list at number 74 – not too shabby!
Other names on the list include favourites such as The Fat Duck in the UK, Le Chateaubriand in Paris, and Heston Blumenthal’s new London restaurant, “Dinner.”
