Felipe Juan Froilan, the 13-year-old grandson of the king of Spain, has learnt at a young age what it feels like to shoot yourself in the foot. (A learning which, considering he’s fifth in line to the Spanish throne, may serve him well later in his life as a state figurehead.)

The young royal was practising shooting with his father on a country estate in Soria, in northern Spain, when he accidentally fired his small-calibre gun straight into his right foot. He had to undergo an operation and is now recovering in Madrid.

Felipe is the eldest grandson of King Juan Carlos, and the son of Princess Elena and aristocrat Jaime de Marichalar. Once he recovers from this mildly embarrassing incident, he may be well advised to have some self-deprecating jokes up his sleeve to pre-empt the ribbing he is likely to get for the rest of his teenage years.
