People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, or PETA as they are better known, is a crazy bunch. They’re a bunch of militant vegetarians, and at one point even went so far as to rename tuna to “sea kittens”, in an attempt to make the canned fish seem more cuddly and cute. This is a little embarrassing.
Somewhat uncharacteristic of their extreme stance on animal rights, a new report has revealed that they may not be so ethical after all. New documents published online have shown that the organisation killed more than 95% of the animals in their care in 2011 – a staggering 1 911 cats and dogs. This all went down at their headquarters in Norfolk, Virginia. This is all part of their ideal to find homes for the various animals, even though last year only 24 animals were adopted into a new home.
The documents were obtained from the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. Fifteen years’ worth of similar records show that PETA has killed more than 27 000 animals since 1998.
A little hypocritical, hey PETA? Why not spend a little less cash on media and marketing and a little more on your actual cause?
