Americans seem to have an insatiable appetite for high-energy, adrenalin fueled sports laced with machoism and violence. Their latest “sport” is no exception; it’s a crude mix of soccer, American football, ice hockey without the skates, a dash of WWE and police brutality.
Ultimate Tazer Ball, also known as UTB by the handful who play it, is being called an “exciting sport of the future” by those who support it. Dreamt up by Eric Prum and his German business partner, Erik Wunsch, the game sees players divided into two teams of four players each. The teams battle for possession of a large ball, indulging in any means to obtain it, including the use of tazers.
Although the league has yet to have an official game, Prum is confident that it will take off, and is planning to launch a tournament in Bangkok next month.
We’re hoping to turn it into a league with a series of events that we’re travelling across the world.
As it stands now there are four teams, the LA Nightlights, the Philly Killawatts, the Toronto Terror, and the San Diego Spartans.
The tazers used in the sport are not police-grade, but still administer a pain-writhing shock, as can be seen in the video. However, unfortunately for the Terror, tazers are considered illegal weapons in Canada and as such they’ll have to practice without them.
There’s an official site, listing all the teams and explaining rules and game-play, and you can even buy merchandise, should you to feel so inclined. Sport or not, the game is sure to deliver entertainment value, and thankfully the States is home to enough people who would actually be willing to subject themselves to a weekly bout of tazering, ensuring that this ludicrous league actually takes off.
