A few days ago we told you about a spicy DA Youth poster, which was causing a bit of a stir because it showed an inter-racial couple embracing, in the nude. This week there’s a new one hitting the headlines – a promotional poster for a play by SA legend Athol Fugard.
The poster for Fugard’s play, ‘Statements after an Arrest under the Immorality Act’, depicts two actors of different races embracing nude, and it’s been deemed a little too adult for Sea Point primary school pupils. The Fugard Theatre, where the show is running during its Cape Town leg, has been ordered to take the posters down following a number of complaints from school parents.
Last week the DA Student Organisation (Daso) claimed that its poster campaign was deliberately intended to challenge prejudiced views about inter-racial relationships in modern-day South Africa. By contrast, the Fugard poster designers point out that the play is about a mixed race relationship in the apartheid era and that the nudity had been “tastefully done”.
