Why does this never happen to me? Why can’t my bank make these kinds of mistakes? A man in India was recently given the shock of his life when he checked his bank balance online and found out that he was the sudden recipient of 980 billion rupees – roughly R78 billion.
A quick trip down to his local ATM confirmed his new title as billionaire. As a high school teacher, he made roughly R5 560 a month, so I’d imagine that this little windfall was a bit of a surprise. He then did something that I would never ever do. He called the bank and let them know that there was some sort of a mistake. Why? WHY?
The officials at the bank have still not removed the money from his account – but the funds are “uncleared,” and as such cannot be withdrawn. There is still no idea as to where the funds have come from, or how they ended up in the man’s account. How long he will remain a billionaire – on paper at least – is unclear.
The government-run bank has refused to comment.
