Gauteng police have launched a massive manhunt for a gang of about 30 men, who they believe are behind the bombing of five ATMs at Jubilee Mall in Hammanskraal, Tshwane, in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Lieutenant Colonel Mavela said a security guard patrolling the mall was confronted by the gang, who were driving a bakkie, and liberated him of his weapon before continuing into the mall and also disarming a second guard.
The group then bombed five FNB ATMs before fleeing with an undisclosed amount of cash.
South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Mavela Masondo said a shootout erupted when officers arrived at the crime scene.
“A shootout ensued between the police, the private security officers, and the suspects. One of the security officers was shot and wounded. He was then taken to the nearest medical care centre for treatment.”

Masondo said no arrests have been made as yet, but the incident follows a previous shootout between two armed suspects and police in Lenasia on 13 March. The suspects were allegedly involved in multiple ATM bombings and other serious crimes across Gauteng and neighbouring provinces.
