Sri Lanka suffered a nationwide blackout last weekend after a group of monkeys decided to have a fight inside a power station.
According to the country’s energy minister, Kumara Jayakody, the blackout occurred when a monkey “came into contact with a grid transformer” near the island’s capital, Colombo.
“A monkey has come in contact with our grid transformer, causing an imbalance in the system,” Mr Jayakody said following the blackout. “Engineers are attending to it to try and restore the service as soon as possible.”
Power was returned to some areas within hours, but many households were without electricity until late on Sunday.
“Only in Sri Lanka can a group of monkeys fighting inside a power station cause an islandwide power outage.”
Sri Lanka’s national power grid is in a desperate state and power outages frequently occur when there are disturbances on the lines, such as a monkey roundhouse-kicking another monkey into a transformer.
The primate community in Sri Lanka did not comment on the blackout, citing the first rule of Monkey Fight Club.
